In a cruel irony that she herself might have savored, fado music rose to international prominence as its iconic figure Amalia Rodrigues died. In the years after she dominated the style for six decades, several young women began to be touted as the 'next Amalia.' One of the first was Dulce Pontes, who gained international recognition after she placed well in a Eurovision song contest and her 'Cançao do Mar' (on Lagrimas) was featured in the soundtrack of a popular Brazilian TV show and the Richard Gere movie 'Primal Fear.'

Although her early albums had several fado songs, including ones by Rodrigues, Pontes began to stretch her artistic muscles and show that she was not going to be confined to one genre, even if it was one that she loved with her heart of hearts.

Her next albums moved away from fado: in O Primeiro Canto she reexamined a variety of overlooked Portuguese folk styles. Her big, dramatic voice, however, like that of Rodrigues, seemed to be the embodiment of the emotionally rich and deep fado.

On her latest release, Pontes continues her explorations in a parallel fado universe of her own creation. The album includes two CDs and a DVD. The first CD is a more stripped-down outing, closer to the traditional taverna intimacy of fado. The second CD sees her using a broader sonic palette, including a children's choir, recorded in various rooms of an ancient stone church.

The first CD is taken from various live performances. With a small band accompanying her, the focus is really on Ponte's voice and her dramatic treatments of the lyrics.

The second CD is recorded in various rooms of the Church of Santa Maria in the medieval Portuguese town of Obidos and the historic Convent of the Order of Christ in the town of Tomar. On 'Ha festa na Mouraria,' her voice is powerful, but exquisitely controlled, with a choir and an arrangement that complement wherever she goes vocally. Though there are a bit of new-age trappings, Ponte's deeply emotional singing breaks through the ethereal mist.

On her DVD, Pontes is seen in concert an Istanbul, as well as behind-the-scenes making the second CD and in a long-form interview (in Portuguese).

Pontes's voice is a stunner. She's a slip of a thing and it is hard to believe the power that comes out of her. That said, three discs full of her dramatic emoting is almost too much of a good thing. It's all great, but three discs can be unrelenting. Can anyone live life at that intensity, that relentlessly? I guess there's always the 'stop' button.

Still, Pontes is a true force of nature. Dancing barefoot (her early musical leanings were towards modern dance) in her elaborate dresses in concert, she seems to summon some primal forces, putting them to the service of finely articulated music expression. Comparisons to other Portuguese singers contemporary or past seem beside the point: Pontes continues to hone an artistic identity that is uniquely her own.
