Piąta juz w dyskografi zespołu płyta została nagrana na algierskiej pustyni i jest powrotem do muzycznych korzeni zespołu. Tym razem elektryczne gitary zostały zastąpione akustycznymi, a towarzyszą im prymitywne, plemienne rytmy. W powstaniu płyty wzięli udział Tunde Adebimpe i Kyp Malone z TV On The Radio, a także Nels Cline z zespołu Wilco.
Twórczość zespołu to afrykański blues, rytm tradycyjnej muzyki regionu południowej Sahary, dźwięki pustyni. Historia grupy zaczęła się w 1982 roku w obozie Tuaregów w Libii. Tinariwen to pierwszy zespół z tego kręgu kulturowego używający gitar elektrycznych. Według Roberta Planta (Led Zeppelin) i Thoma Yorke'a (Radiohead), grupa ma szansę zostać najlepszym współczesnym zespołem rockowym. Pierwszy studyjny album Tinariwen - "The Radio Tisdas Sessions" ukazał się na CD w 2002 roku, grupa ma jednak na koncie sporą liczbę amatorsko rejestrowanych kaset. Druga płyta zespołu, zatytułowana "Amassakoul", przyniosła formacji międzynarodowy rozgłos i zaowocowała koncertami na całym świecie, m.in. na festiwalu Roskilde czy u boku Carlosa Santany i The Rolling Stones.

On Tassili, Touareg guitar heroes Tinariwen's and their debut for Anti Records, strip their army of hypnotic electric guitars sound back to its barest, and offer a twist. Recorded in a protected region of the Southeastern Algerian desert, this nomadic group recorded Tassili with only acoustic guitars and hand percussion. Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio contributed to the sessions in Africa. The tapes were sent to the States, where Nels Cline added guitar parts, and New Orleans' Dirty Dozen Brass Band's horns were melded into the mix.

The soundtrack of the Touareg revolution in Saharan North Africa was created by electric guitars. Plaintive rhythms created a unique desert blues whose lyrics raged against world indifference and evoked a longing for disappearing freedoms.

On their enthralling new album entitled Tassili, the renowned band TINARIWEN have set down their electric guitars and returned to the very essence of their art. Recorded in a protected region of the South-Eastern Algerian desert, the group returned to the roots of their music, with only acoustic guitars and unamplified percussion. During recording, the band was joined by Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone of the band TV On The Radio. Later on, guitarist Nels Cline (Wilco) and the horns of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band contributed to create an album that reaches deep into the essence of TINARIWEN's sound while simultaneously opening itself to the surrounding world.
