Wyjątkowy album w dorobku wielkiego Neila Younga. Legendarny Kanadyjczyk, miłośnik nowych technologii, natury i zaciekły wróg korporacji, płytę "The Hitchhiker" nagrał 41 lat temu, w 1976 roku. Wtedy jednak się nie ukazała. Będzie miała premierę dopiero teraz, jako 38. studyjny materiał jednego z ojców chrzestnych grunge'u, indie rocka i folk rocka.

Piosenki na album Neil nagrał w Indigo Ranch Recording Studio w Malibu, w Kalifornii. Jedna jedyna sesja, podczas której zarejestrowano wszystkie utwory, odbyła się w nocy, a rejestrował ją David Briggs, będący również współproducentem płyty.

Piosenki powstały w bardzo dobrym, twórczym okresie w życiu Neila. Jak wspominał po latach, napisanie utworu "Pocahontas" zajęło mu zaledwie 20 minut. Parę kompozycji znanych jest z innych wydawnictw Kanadyjczyka, z "American Stars 'n Bars", "Decade", "Comes A Time", "Rust Never Sleeps", "Hawks & Doves", "Le Noise". Tylko na "Hitchhiker" są z kolei "Hawaii" i "Give Me Strength".

Originally recorded in 1976 with producer David Briggs but never released, the acoustic album from the Canadian singer-songwriter features two unreleased songs as well as early versions of songs that appeared in later albums.

On August 11th, 1976, Neil Young walked into Indigo Studios in Malibu and recorded 10 songs with his acoustic guitar. The results of that session are collected on Hitchhiker, a new Young LP due out on September 8th.

Young recorded Hitchhiker with David Briggs, who helped produce many of Young's most famous albums, including Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush and On the Beach. John Hanlon, another long-time collaborator, contributed some post-production to the original Malibu recordings.
