Album „Play”, nagrany wspólnie przez trębacza Theo Crokera i pianistę Sullivana Fortnera, to jedna z najciekawszych premier jazzowych 2025 roku. Wydany przez ACT Music i już dostępny w serwisach streamingowych, projekt pokazuje obu artystów w wyjątkowo intymnym, kameralnym formacie, który pozwala skupić się na ich muzycznej relacji – pełnej spontaniczności, wzajemnego zaufania i improwizacyjnego zrozumienia.
Croker i Fortner od dawna krzyżowali swoje artystyczne ścieżki, jednak dopiero „Play” przedstawia ich jako równorzędnych partnerów w duecie. Każdy z nich wnosi do nagrania własną wrażliwość: Croker – charakterystyczne, przestrzenne brzmienie trąbki i zamiłowanie do nowoczesnych poszukiwań, a Fortner – wirtuozerię opartą na głębokiej znajomości jazzowej tradycji. Razem tworzą narrację, w której nie ma potrzeby użycia większego składu, bo sama interakcja dwóch głosów wystarcza, by opowiedzieć pełną historię.
Początkowo album miał zawierać standardy, jednak pierwsze podejście w studiu okazało się niesatysfakcjonujące. Artyści postanowili więc porzucić plan i następnego dnia nagrywać bez ustaleń, prób czy szkiców – pozwalając, by to chwila poprowadziła muzykę. Jedynym wcześniej przygotowanym elementem była otwierająca modlitwa „A Prayer for Peace”. Ten gest rezygnacji z kontroli nadał całemu materiałowi wyjątkową świeżość. „Play” jest zapisem żywego, swobodnego dialogu, w którym muzycy reagują na siebie w czasie rzeczywistym, odkrywając wspólny język bez filtrów i konwenansów.
Na krążku znalazło się czternaście krótkich form – od medytacyjnych miniatur po bardziej ekspresyjne improwizacje. W duecie trąbka i fortepian zyskują niezwykłą przejrzystość: słychać każdy oddech, każdy akcent, najmniejszą zmianę nastroju. Brak sekcji rytmicznej sprawia, że przestrzeń między dźwiękami staje się równie ważna jak same frazy. Muzyka pulsuje wewnętrzną energią, ale pozostaje delikatna i pełna powietrza. To jazz w najczystszej postaci – skupiony na spotkaniu dwóch indywidualności.

The album "Play" brings together for the first time two of the most important American musicians of the current generation who are breaking new ground in jazz and far beyond: trumpeter Theo Croker and pianist Sullivan Fortner.
The two have known each other for more than 20 years, but "Play" is their first recording together as leaders. Their original idea was to record a collection of modern jazz standards, perhaps with a few versions of popular songs. So Croker and Fortner went into the studio, made a recording… and then discarded it. In its entirety. Theo Croker remembers: "When we played it back, it felt very old-fashioned. Not in the sense that the songs weren't good. But it felt like we were just playing things that had been recorded many times before Sullivan Fortner agrees: "We felt like we weren't really being ourselves, it felt more like school. We had both played a lot of music from the great American songbook in the past. Those are great songs that we've been involved with. But it wasn't necessarily the music we gravitated towards when performing. We're always rooted in something beyond jazz. The music we make always reflects the entire diaspora of black American music, not just one particular genre."
So Croker and Fortner went back into the studio…. The very next day. The plan this time: no plan. No compositions (except for the opener, A Prayer for Peace). Let's just PLAY. Theo Croker takes up the story: "We just had spontaneous little ideas: 'We'll play this song quickly. For this song, we'll take four notes that we do NOT want to play. For this song, I'll play long notes, you play fast notes. I'll come up with a melody and we'll just see where it goes. In just one hour we were done." The process may sound simple in theory, but in reality it contains the essence of two lifetimes of learning and improvising. Sullivan Fortner says: "It just felt right, it felt like: This is really us. It inspired us and drew us in spiritually and brought out a lot of things that we learned together and together."
This extraordinary recording, now released on ACT, has an interesting backstory: Theo Croker was already featured on a couple of previous releases on ACT: first on Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic XII - Sketches of Miles (recorded in 2021) and then on Emile Parisien's transatlantic project Louise (2022), first in the studio and then live. ACT Managing Director Andreas Brandis then suggested that the trumpeter release a more acoustic, chamber music-influenced album - something very different from his work as a leader, which tends to straddle the boundaries between jazz, hip-hop and pop. Croker's first instinctive reaction to the proposal was positive and he offered a duo recording with Sullivan Fortner. An idea the two musicians had been mulling over for some time.
PLAY is one of those unusual opportunities where everything just fell into place. In today's music business, that's not just rare, it's a miracle. No set of rules, no questions about genres, no focus on target groups…or singles…or streaming suitability. Just the music. Even though the most diverse influences flow together here, the album has a particularly emblematic and lively statement about what the spirit of jazz is: freedom, interaction, the possibility of unrestricted expression and communication with one another. Or, as Sullivan Fortner puts it: 'This is simply two brothers playing'
