(. . .) "Sleepwalkers" nie jest zwykłą składanką. Album wypełniają przede wszystkim utwory współpracowników Sylviana zrealizowane z jego udziałem oraz inne kolaboracje. Choć materiał pochodzi z różnych źródeł, trafnie oddaje styl naszego bohatera. W zebranych tu kompozycjach znaleźć można odwołania do kameralistyki i elektroakustyki, a w bardziej melodyjnych momentach pobrzmiewają echa melancholijnego folku, czasem doszukać można się także reminiscencji najbardziej eleganckich, szykownych reprezentantów tradycji new romantic - jednak wszelkie te elementy przefiltrowane przez specyficzną wrażliwość Sylviana nabierają bardzo swoistego wyrazu. W konsekwencji dostajemy piosenki niełatwe, ascetyczne w formie, statyczne, niekiedy senne w nastroju, niejednoznaczne w przekazie. Smak wokalisty, powściągliwość w dawkowaniu dźwięków i emocji sprawiają, że nawet najbardziej przystępne fragmenty zdecydowanie wyrastają ponad sentymentalną dźwiękową tapetę skrojoną pod salon aspirującej klasy średniej. Te wycofane, oniryczne, zdystansowane, zaśpiewane głębokim, aksamitnym, lecz gorzkim, przyozdobionym vibrattem głosem piosenki wymagają cierpliwości; niektórych słuchaczy zrazić może także pewna manieryczność Sylviana. Niemniej warto dać niniejszej płycie szansę! (. . .)

(. . .) Sylvian's genre-takes are always a little skewed, as befitting a guy who's worked with Holger Czukay, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and other great avant/pop synthesists. Sometimes this tweaking adds frisson to what might have otherwise been too stale, too traditional. Sylvian-goes-country twangs for sure, but it also squeals and clonks and squirms with little Matmos-like musique concrète embellishments. But on a few occasions Sylvian's sound-art touches feel like oddball window dressing on flimsy tunes. And when one of those Blemish/Manafon style songs pops up, you're struck by what a singular sound-world Sylvian's solo albums have created in the last 10 years. That's not an achievement to chuck away lightly, so it's good that Sylvian has these one-off collaborations as release valves. Sleepwalkers naturally doesn't draw you into a world as fully realized as one of Sylvian's true albums. But his fearlessness, if not quite his versatility, at tackling new sounds (and even new structures) is still a beacon, especially at an age when many of his contemporaries have fossilized into post-punk heritage acts (. . .)

For die-hard fans, and I’m one, the disc just conjures impatience for the next Sylvian full-length (. . .)

Available as a gatefold 2LP with exclusive art print and as a gatefold digipack CD, this new edition also features the previously unreleased track “Modern Interiors”. SLEEPWALKERS also spotlights the innovators who contributed to MANAFON and BLEMISH. CHRISTIAN FENNESZ hangs a crackling, shimmering curtain behind the vocal on ‘transit,’ matching his signature mass of sui generis sounds to sylvian’s stately performance. and the title track began with an instrumental handed to SYLVIAN by MARTIN BRANDLMAYR of POLWECHSEL, soon after the first recording session for MANAFON. spite crackles in the gaps between the percussion, and onkyo artists TOSHIMARU NAKAMURA and SACHIKO M set the stage for the scathing lyrics in the chorus.
