Editor's Info
Anger becomes jazz! Drummer Johnathan Blake presents dynamic tracks with an unmistakable political and social agenda on his third Blue Note album "My Life Matters".
It was produced by Derrick Hodge, and with saxophonist Dayne Stephens, vibraphonist Jalen Baker, pianist Fabian Almazan and bassist Dezron Douglas as well as guests Bilal and DJ Jahi Sundance, Blake has assembled an excellent group for his heartfelt work.
"My Life Matters" is a suite of songs commissioned by the Jazz Gallery's Fellowship Series that explores the importance of family values and the societal need to stand up against injustice.
Members of the group include Blake on drums, Dayna Stephens on saxophones / EWI, Joel Ross on vibraphone, Fabian Almazan on piano and Rashaan Carter on bass.
"When I started composing one of the pieces, young African-Americans were being brutalized. As a person of color, I thought, 'Man, maybe I'm not speaking up enough, even though my parents kept inculcating it in me.' I started thinking about the people before me who were speaking out through their music. Max Roach with his suite 'Freedom Now', John Coltrane with 'Alabama'. I asked myself: 'How can I raise my voice through my music? That's where the title comes from: 'My Life Matters'.
It's not just about Black Lives Matter, it's about all of us. We have to learn to coexist with each other. We spend so much time worrying about ourselves that we forget to take care of others and recognize our differences and similarities. We were all created to live in harmony with each other. These posts will hopefully serve as a starting point for an open discussion about this."
