It is not necessarily a plus for musical enjoyment when two leading drummers are on stage together. But "21 Spices" was a success that was celebrated enthusiastically by the press and audience at several concerts.
Wolf Kerschek, the arranger of these titles composed by Trilok Gurtu, had carefully selected the soloists for the NDR Big Band. On stage were two guests whose musical roots could hardly be more different: the Indian tabla specialist and percussionist Trilok Gurtu, who was also involved in the conception together with the producer Joachim Becker, and the Briton Simon Phillips, who is known for his work with the rock band Toto. The result of the combination is all the more fascinating as the project was additionally spiced up by Michel Alibo on double bass and Roland Cabezas on guitar.
"21 Spices" refers to the 21 musicians involved, who lend character to the music - sometimes shrill, sometimes restrained - and have created an unusual sound experience. The recording "21 Spices" therefore feels like a single event, presenting a special project with exceptional musicians for one concert season. In a mixture of studio and live recordings, the album documents the furious energy of a percussionist collaboration for all those who were unable to attend the program premieres at the Drums'N'Percussion Festival in Paderborn on 21 May 2010 or the Elbjazz Festival in Hamburg on 31 May 2010, which was elevated to a new level of sonic diversity and musical sophistication with the support of the NDR Bigband.
