Czy warto marzyć? Zdecydowanie za rzadko zadajemy sobie to pytanie. Belgijski pianista Bram De Looze nie ma chyba z tym problemu. Nagranie z festiwalu w Brukseli w 2025 roku jest tego najlepszym dowodem. Bo chyba z marzeń do niego doszło.
Zgromadzić na jednej scenie kontrabasistę Thomasa Morgana, drummera Joey'a Barona i wiolonczelistę Hanka Robertsa to nie lada wyzwanie. Każdy z nich jest osobną wyspą na jazzowym oceanie, każdy z nich jest rozchwytywanym sidemanem.
Ta gwiazdorska konstelacja zebrana przez belgijskiego pianistę tworzy unikalną dynamikę, transcendentalną podróż, podczas której spontaniczność, intuicja i nieograniczona kreatywność dają wspaniałe owoce. Tego wieczoru w Brukseli - odgrywające duże znaczenie - bliskość i intymność były wyczuwalne na scenie. Thomas Morgan - kontrabasista, wystąpił na ponad 100 albumach, zdobywając reputację jednego z najbardziej rozchwytywanych sidemanów w świecie jazzu. Artysta o unikalnym podejściu do instrumentu i wyjątkowym zrozumieniu muzyki. Współpracował z takimi artystami jak David Binney, Steve Coleman, Joey Baron, Josh Roseman, Brad Shepik, Jakob Bro, Dan Tepfer, Jim Black, John Abercrombie, Masabumi Kikuchi, Sylvie Courvoisier, Kenny Wollesen, Gerald Cleaver, Adam Rogers i Kenny Werner.
Morgan był wyróżnioną postacią na albumie ECM z 2017 roku Small Town, nagranym w duecie z gitarzystą Billem Frisellem. Album dokumentuje występ na żywo w Village Vanguard w 2016 roku.
W 2014 roku trio Morgana, w którego skład wchodzili klawiszowiec Pete Rende i perkusista Dan Weiss, zostało zrecenzowane w New York Times przez krytyka jazzowego Bena Ratliffa, który opisał Morgana, jako „muzyka jazzowego, którego obecność na nagraniu lub podczas występu niemal automatycznie czyni go wartym uwagi”.

Joey Baron (ur. 1955) jest jednym z najwybitniejszych perkusistów współczesnego jazzu. Lista jazzowych artystów, którzy zapraszali Barona do swoich zespołów jest imponująca – m.in. Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, Chet Baker, Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Big Joe Turner, John Abercrombie, Mel Lewis, Pat Martino, Arthur Blythe, Ron Carter, James Carter, Harry Sweets Edison, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Jim Hall, Randy Brecker, Marian McPartland, John Scofield, Marc Johnson, Fred Hersh, John Taylor, Enrico Pieranunzi, Toots Thielemans, John Medeski, Marc Ribot, John Zorn, John Lourie, Bill Frisell, Fred Frith, Josh Roseman, Tim Berne, Dave Douglas, Wayne Horvitz. Joey Baron współpracował również z artystami spoza kręgu jazzowego, m.in. z: Laurie Anderson, Viniciusem Cantuarią, Davidem Bowie’m, Patricią Barber, Philipem Glassem i The Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Z autorskim zespołem Barondown (z puzonistą Steve’em Swellem i saksofonistą Ellerym Eskelinem) zadebiutował w połowie lat 90. Chwilę później założył kwartet z udziałem Arthura Blythe’a, Rona Cartera i Billa Frisella – uchodzący za jeden z ciekawszych zespołów jazzowych ostatnich lat. Ich autorskie albumy „Down Home” oraz „We’ll Soon Find Out” zebrały wspaniałe recenzje w fachowej prasie jazzowej.

Hank Roberts (ur. 1954) od początku lat 80-tych pozostaje w centrum nowojorskiej awangardy. Jego płyty można znaleźć w zakładkach rock, jazz, avant-garde, folk, i modern classical. Był członkiem Bill Frisell Quartet, grup Tima Berne’a., Arcado String Trio, zespołów Marka Feldmana, Marilyn Crispell, Marka Dressera. Ma na swoim koncie kilkanaście autorskich płyt wydanych w barwach JMT, Level Green, CamJazz, Winter & Winter i Sunnyside.

Belgijski pianista Bram De Looze, którego odrębna wizja muzyczna znalazła wyraz zarówno w projektach solowych, jak i we współpracy z uznanymi na całym świecie muzykami. Wyjątkowe umiejętności techniczne i muzyczna dojrzałość De Looze'a przyniosły mu znaczne uznanie krytyków. Po nauce w New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music w Nowym Jorku, De Looze założył swój pierwszy międzynarodowy zespół SEPTYCH, z którym w 2015 roku wydał płytę w barwach Clean Feed Records. Z Joey'em Baronem współtworzy trio MiXMONK – Baron / De Looze / Verheyen), z Stéphane'm Gallandem grupę The Mystery of KEM. Pojawia się w wielu składach z kreatywnego jazzu. Jego zespół Vice Versa z nowojorskim mistrzem perkusji Erikiem McPhersonem (Jackie Mclean, Andrew Hill, Pharaoh Sanders, Fred Hersch) i berlińskim basistą Felixem Henkelhausenem (Jim Black, Nate Wooley, Lotte Anker) zyskał poklask po obu stronach Oceanu. Jego solowa kariera nabrała rozpędu po akcesie do projektu "Piano e Forte" (2016), który wykorzystywał brzmienie historycznych instrumentów w muzyce współczesnej.

At Brussels Jazz Festival in Flagey, the four musicians proved to be world class storytellers through music. Thomas Morgan (double bass)
Morgan began playing the cello 7 years of age, before switching to upright-bass at 14. In 2003 he received his bachelor's degree in Music from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Harvie Swartz and Garry Diall. He also took lessons with Ray Brown and Peter Herbert. Morgan worked with David Binney, Steve Coleman, Joey Baron, Josh Roseman, Brad Shepik, Steve Cardenas, Timuçin Şahin, Kenny Wollesen, Gerald Cleaver, Adam Rogers and Kenny Werner throughout his career. He is also cooperating with Jakob Bro, Dan Tepfer, Jim Black, John Abercrombie, Masabumi Kikuchi and the Sylvie Courvoisier-Mark Feldman Quartet. Morgan lead his own trio.

Joey Baron (drums)
Baron, who is of Jewish heritage, was born on June 26, 1955, in Richmond, Virginia. When he was nine, he taught himself how to play the drums. As a teenager, he played in rock bands and dixieland jazz groups and was given his first gig opportunity at the age of 13 when pianist BJ Doyle's regular drummer took ill and she knew he was a keeper after just minutes. After high school, he spent a year at the Berklee College of Music. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s and embarked on a professional career, playing with Carmen McRae and Al.. Jarreau. He worked as a freelance drummer and session musician with Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, and Hampton Hawes.
In 1982 he moved to New York City and joined guitarist Bill Frisell, with whom he would play often throughout his career. He also played in groups with Red Rodney, Fred Hersch, Enrico Pieranunzi, and Marc Johnson. Starting in the late 1980s, he became a bigger part of the avant-garde jazz scene when he played regularly at the Knitting Factory, recorded with singer Laurie Anderson, and began a long association with John Zorn. For several years he participated in Zorn's projects Naked City and Masada.
Baron contributed to David Bowie's Outside (1995). Bowie would later praise Baron, stating: "Metronomes shake in fear, he's so steady."

Bram De Looze (piano)
Bram De Looze is a Belgian pianist whose distinct musical vision has found its way through both solo piano projects and collaborations with internationally acclaimed musicians. De Looze's unique technical skill and musical maturity have earned him considerable critical praise and respect from his peers, as his music spotlights his far-ranging interests throughout his continuous quest for artistic depth, momentum and freedom. In his teens De Looze made his entrance to the European scene with LABtrio, a collaboration with bassist Anneleen Boehme and drummer Lander Gyselinck. After having spent one year at the New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music in New York, De Looze launched his first international 7-piece band 'Septych' (Clean Feed Records 2015). De Looze plays with internationally renowned musicians such as Joey Baron (MiXMONK – Baron / De Looze / Verheyen), Stéphane Galland (The Mystery of KEM feat. Ravichandra Kulur) and with multiple improvisation ensembles. These collaborations have taken him throughout the world to perform at cultural institutions, music venues and celebrated festivals. Recently De Looze felt the urge for a new collaboration called Vice Versa with two great artists who are natural extensions of his world of sound: New York master drummer Eric McPherson (Jackie Mclean, Andrew Hill, Pharaoh Sanders, Fred Hersch) and Berlin bassist Felix Henkelhausen (Jim Black, Nate Wooley, Lotte Anker). Their debut album Vice Versa (2023) was released on the Dutch label DOX Records.
His solo career took off with Piano e Forte (2016), a project for which he approached historical instruments from a contemporary perspective combined with the integration of non-equal tuning systems. His 2nd album, Switch The Stream (2018) indicated a renewed search for movement, evolution and introspection. Infusing the sound with a non-equal tuning stands out even more in his third solo chapter, Colour Talk (2020). It continues this trajectory with a continued attempt to renew from within.
In 2024, De Looze released his 4th solo album - with which he will be touring 'Down Under' (Australia/Korea/Japan/New-Zealand/…). And in 2025 a second album with his trio Vice Versa will come out.

Hank Roberts (cello)
Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Roberts initially made his name in the 1980s legendary New York Downtown scene alongside such frequent collaborators as Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, Marc Ribot and John Zorn, finding a second home at the famed Knitting Factory.
Currently a member of Bill Frisell’s group, Harmony, he has been a regular touring partner and recording artist on many of the celebrated guitarist’s projects since 1985, and was featured on his Grammy award winning recording, Unspeakable.
Roberts has shared stages and recording studios with some of the most celebrated musicians in the world. He’s recorded 10 albums as a leader and co-leader on the ‘Winter & Winter’ label, along with numerable self-released recordings. His 2008 CD Green, with drummer Jim Black and guitarist Marc Ducret, won that year’s German Recording Critics’ Award in the Jazz category.

His trio recording, featuring Jacob Sacks and Vinnie Sperrazza, Congeries of Ethereal Phenomenon was released on Newvelle Records in 2019. His most recent recording with the Hank Roberts Sextet, Science of Love, will be released on Sunnyside Records in July 2021.
