Editor's Info
AVID Jazz continues its Four Classic Albums series with a remastered 2CD release of Wynton Kelly, including a rare album by trumpeter Don Sleet, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel information.
"Kelly Great" (1959); "Kelly At Midnite" (1960); "Wynton Kelly!" (1961) and Don Sleet's "All Members" (1961).
Our first Wynton Kelly set has become one of our best sellers in the years since its release. Wynton didn't release many albums under his own name in the fifties and early sixties, and when he did, they were major events in the jazz calendar. We waited patiently for an opportunity to release a second set, but just couldn't find the fourth album. Recently, the opportunity arose when, while searching for great unsung trumpeters for our Classic Jazz Instrumentalists series (AMSC1293), we happened to come across an album by a young 22-year-old trumpeter named Don Sleet. We were impressed by the amazing band this young man had put together: Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Heath, Ron Carter and Jimmy Cobb, not a bad little combo! Reading about this young trumpeter, modeled after the likes of Kenny Dorham and Art Farmer, with a little lyrical Miles thrown in for good measure, we discovered that this was the only album he recorded under his own name and is now quite difficult to track down. Don sadly never had the chance to record another album and died in obscurity in 1986 at the age of 47. This was our opportunity to complete our tribute to Wynton Kelly by including his three remaining albums from the above period and hearing his performance on the rare Don Sleet All Members album.
We are doubly fortunate here at AVID because not only can we release three excellent Wynton Kelly albums, but also an album by a criminally underrated trumpeter, Don Sleet, who we feel deserved a better musical legacy. To help you rediscover our first Wynton Kelly set, we've included excerpts from our original sales notes below.
"Wynton Kelly was born in Jamaica in 1931, but grew up in Brooklyn, New York City, at the age of four and was barely out of his teens when he made his first recording session, 'Piano Interpretations,' in 1951. As a young prodigy, Wynton had already played with Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young and as accompanist to Dinah Washington for three years! When he was drafted into the army in 1952, it would be another six years before he recorded another album under his own name. Music for trio and quartet can be heard on 'Piano', an album with 'two very different flavors', as it says in the original liner notes. In the trio 'for a subdued, atmospheric, almost delicate mood', Wynton is accompanied by Kenny Burrell on guitar and Paul Chambers on bass. For the quartet, Philly Joe Jones takes his place on drums, while Burrell's guitar 'takes on more of a horn role'. More music for the trio, but now also with some tracks for the sextet, 'Kelly Blue', recorded in 1959... from the original liner notes to our last selection 'Someday My Prince Will Come': 'Wynton is the light for a cigarette. He lights the fire and keeps it burning. Without him there is no smoking'. That's Miles! All four albums have been digitally remastered."
