All of the master takes from the session presented here were issued under the name Jazz Artists Guild, which gathered players that had participated in an alternative series of concerts at Newport 1960. With the exception of a 1972 jam session privately captured in Pescara, Italy, these are the only existing recordings presenting Charles Mingus and Roy Eldridge together. Mingus and celebrated Count Basie Orchestra drummer Jo Jones had only recorded together previously during a 1953 Roost session by Sonny Stitt with the Johnny Richards orchestra (they would never record together again after this 1960 date). These are also the only existing recordings of Mingus playing with pianist Tommy Flanagan.
On the other hand, Mingus and Eric Dolphy had a longstanding partnership, which was sadly interrupted forever due to the saxophonist's unexpected death in 1964.
