Editor's info
• A special digipak reissue of Harold McNair's 1970 jazz-soul-rock album "The Fence" - a longstanding collector's rarity on LP - featuring Steve Winwood, Keith Tippett, Rick Grech, Danny Thompson & Terry Cox, among others. Also included are five bonus tracks from his 1968 album "Harold McNair" with Bill Le Sage, Spike Heatley & Tony Carr - also long out of print worldwide.

• McNair's most famous composition, 'The Hipster', which has become a perennial fixture on the playlists at jazz clubs and was included on Gilles Peterson's recent "Impressed Vol.2" compilation of 1960s British jazz. There was a whole Jazz Legends programme devoted to McNair in December 2005.

• Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1931, Harold McNair was a lifelong friend of Joe Harriott, and toured Europe in the Quincy Jones band just before moving to the UK. He quickly gained a reputation as a formidable player on flute, alto and tenor saxophone, leading to a regular slot at Ronnie Scott's, some work with Mingus in London in '61, and the recording of albums for Island & RCA, in '65 & '68. Roland Kirk was a key influence. McNair died of lung cancer in March 1971. He was only 39.

• Notable recorded works as a jazz sideman included sessions with Jon Hendricks, Blossom Dearie, Philly Joe Jones & Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. He played on JohnMartyn's "The Tumbler" and Davy Graham's "Large As Life and Twice As Natural", was a regular member of Donovan's touring & recording band and worked with Ginger Baker's Air Force. His flute was heavily featured on the soundtrack for Ken Loach's film "Kes" , as was his tenor saxophone on the original 1962 soundtrack theme from "Dr. No"
