Editor's info:
Combined in a limited edition: Beethoven's famous Symphonies Nos. 4, 6 & 8 by the Academy of Ancient Music, together with Méhul's Symphony No. 1, Knecht's Portrait Musical de la Nature and Cherubini's Lodoïska Overture by the same performers.

Editor's Info about Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No.6:
This recording presents two symphonies "on the theme of nature." Valid though this expression is, it nevertheless calls for quotation marks. Far from being a prefiguration of Beethoven's famous Pastoral, Justin Heinrich Knechts' Symphonie 'Portrait musical de la nature' represented a highly convincing attempt by it's composer to extricate himself from program music. It is exciting to hear these two works recorded together for the first time by the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin directed by it's concertmaster, Bernhard Forck.

Editor's info about Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 8, Méhul: Symphony No. 1, Cherubini: Lodoïska Overture:
The least famous of Beethoven’s symphonies? Yet these two works are genuine tours de force: the composer takes the listener on a journey whose destination never seems to be known in advance, one brimming over with structural innovations subtly brought out in this interpretation by the musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.
This recording is also an opportunity to discover just how clearly Cherubini’s music prefigured that of Beethoven, whereas Méhul’s symphony is a response à la française to the German composer.

BBC Music Magazine - 4 out of 5 stars (Performance) / 5 out of 5 stars (Recording)
All four works are given lithe and energetic accounts, excellently precise even at the generally speedy choice of tempos, and amount to a high-quality shop window for the current state of period-instrument performance.

Gramophone Magazine
the pure heft simply isn’t there to guarantee that all the voices in the discourse are heard with equal weight. That’s a shame, for when these performances catch fire, they can thrill as Beethoven surely always should.
