Taking Turns, nagrany dziesięć lat temu w nowojorskim Avatar Studio, przedstawia duńskiego gitarzystę Jakoba Bro, w towarzystwie wielopokoleniowej grupy jazzowych improwizatorów. Lee Konitz, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran i Thomas Morgan wnoszą osobistą energię w sesję, która omijając konwencje zespołu „gwiazd” , kładzie nacisk na pracę zespołową. Przestrzenna muzyka Bro zachęca do intensywnych interakcji między muzykami tworząc nowe ścieżki.

Chyba nikt w wydawnictwie ECM nie zebrał takiej supergrupy do nagrania jednego albumu (pomijając oczywiście zespoły o trwałych składach). W dodatku duński gitarzysta w roli lidera stał się najmłodszym uczestnikiem tego międzypokoleniowego kolektywu.
Aż się nie chce wierzyć, że sesja odbyła się 10 lat temu, gdy jeszcze żył legendarny saksofonista altowy i sopranowy Lee Konitz. Przy perkusji zasiadł kolejny luminarz – weteran Andrew Cyrille, jedyny w swoim rodzaju perkusista free-jazzowy, który gra niezwykle finezyjnie i transparentnie. Skład sekstetu uzupełniły kolejne znakomitości: gitarzysta Bill Frisell, pianista Jason Moran oraz kontrabasista Thomas Morgan.
Podziwu godne jest to, że w tak niebywałej harmonii muzycy wykonali siedem utworów napisanych przez Jakoba Bro, który wykazał się tu wysokim talentem kompozytorskim i aranżacyjnym.
Koronkowa faktura muzyki rozciąga się na całym, niezwykle jednorodnym albumie. Wiodącym instrumentem jest delikatnie brzmiący i jakże wymowny w swych przepięknie wyważonych wypowiedziach saksofon Konitza.
Ten rodzaj jazzowego impresjonizmu rozwijał wprawdzie wcześniej Frisell, ale ponieważ został zaproszony do gry, należy to traktować jako gest ze strony Jakoba Bro: uczeń zaprosił mistrza. Tym sposobem z niewiarygodną komplementarnością wypowiedzieli się obaj wielcy gitarzyści.

Played by world-class personnel including Bill Frisell and the late, great alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, this 2014 set is full of subtle, spontaneous ideas. When Miles Davis led the 1948-50 sessions that became jazz’s Birth of the Cool releases, the most bewitching solo voice apart from his own trumpet was that of a little-known 21-year-old called Lee Konitz. The alto saxophonist’s quietly captivating work still shimmers as a central feature of Danish guitarist Jakob Bro’s Taking Turns, also recorded in New York but more than 60 years later, and strangely consigned to ECM’s vaults from 2014 until now.
Bro’s reputation grew when he succeeded Bill Frisell in drum master Paul Motian’s band in 2006, the connection that first introduced him to Konitz, who can instantly invent fresh lines to any composition put in front of him. Bro credits this ability with his own understanding of how to lead an improviser’s band that plays composed music with looseness and flow.
Here, alongside Bro and Konitz, is a subtle supergroup comprising sound-painting guitarist Frisell, pianist Jason Moran, double-bassist Thomas Morgan, and former Cecil Taylor drummer Andrew Cyrille. Black is All Colors at Once arrives in delicate guitar chimes, before the then 86-year-old Konitz (still six inventive years away from his Covid-related death in 2020) purrs deep pensive sounds and breathes gleaming upper tones, which he sustains without a moment’s repetition over the harmonising guitars and Morgan’s quietly fast-moving bass. Haiti, a delicious slow shuffle, features a rare Konitz appearance on soprano sax; Milford Sound is a nod to Cyrille’s famous free-drums contemporary Milford Graves that releases a seductively under-the-radar swing. Pearl River is a brooding free-rhythmic swirl for all the players, while the hornless Mar Del Plata is a lovely songlike waltz that could seamlessly fit on the best Frisell albums.
For its superb lineup, understated themes, and spontaneously ensemble-engendered ideas, Taking Turns is a little masterpiece.

Taking Turns, recorded in New York’s Avatar Studio a decade ago, finds Danish guitarist Jakob Bro joined by a multi-generational cast of improvisers, highly distinctive players all. Lee Konitz, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran and Thomas Morgan lend their energies to a session that bypasses conventions of the “all-star” band and puts the emphasis on teamwork. Bro’s space-conscious music encourages fresh responses: an atmospheric hint, or a fragment of gentle melody, opening up new trails to explore. “My compositions are about catching a glimpse of a feeling, sketching it down and then unfolding it as we record”, said Jakob Bro at the time.
