"Jesus martyred and dying for the sin of the world": this is what the Hamburg writer and senator Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747) called his dramatic version of the Passion - and this poem was so popular that it was set to music almost a dozen times in the Hanseatic city. First by Reinhard Keiser, then by Johann Mattheson, Georg Friedrich Händel and Georg Philipp Telemann, among others. The lawyer and diplomat Jacob Schuback (1726-1784) also published his version of this so-called "Brockes Passion", and one would not think that he, the son of a very distinguished family, was a dilettante in the art of music: what he created in his musical "extra lessons" at the age of around 30 is a rousing plot in the truest sense of the word, in which choruses, recitatives and arias follow one another with almost operatic speed and bloodthirsty characters act with a lively presence.
