Roland Wilson, the founder and director of the two ensembles gathered here, has a happy hand in dealing with the music of the 16th and 17th centuries. His impressive reconstruction of the first German opera Dafne by Heinrich Schütz is still fondly remembered, and his current work will also find its place here: The grandiose festive mass with which the whole of Venice celebrated the end of a plague epidemic in 1631, which had carried off a third of the population, could have sounded like this. The Doge kept his vow, had the church of Maria Salute built, the "Serenissima Repubblica" rejoiced, and Clauio Monteverdi provided music whose splendor could hardly be surpassed. Among other things, he used "slide trumpets", with which extraordinary sounds could be achieved: You can see them in old pictures and hear them - reconstructed - in this recording. This is how a republic once gave thanks.
