Born in New York City in 1925, Mal Waldron is best known as a composer and arranger, but began his musical career as an alto saxophonist until he met a man called "Bird" and wisely switched to piano! Incredibly, Mal released over 100 albums under his own name during his long career and contributed to countless more as composer, arranger and pianist. His name is probably on more albums in the extensive AVID Jazz catalog than that of any other musician! It would probably take less time and space to list the musicians Mal hasn't played with than the ones he has! in 1956 he was recommended by Jackie McLean as the house pianist for the famous Prestige label. Here he played alongside Coltrane, McLean, Burrell, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy and everyone in between.
One of his best-known compositions is the rousing, 17-minute-long Soul Eyes on our release Bobby Jaspar: Interplay For 2 Trumpets & 2 Tenors, on which Jaspar plays with none other than the mighty John Coltrane. However, even more jazz fans will be familiar with Mal's work as pianist and arranger for the legendary Billie Holiday between April 1957 and her tragic untimely death in 1959. He later took on the same task for the great singer Miss Abbey Lincoln.
For our four classic tracks, we visited Mal in the late 1950s and recorded him in a trio, quintet and quartet line-up (McLean on one track) as well as a larger line-up for the excellent Mal 2, which features two classic horn players in John Coltrane and Jackie McLean.
