Editor's info
This is the second edition of the collaboration between ACT and Château Palmer - one of the most legendary Grands Crus of the left bank of Bordeaux. This time, Château Palmer itself became the exclusive recording venue for an equally exceptional ensemble.
"Trio" consists of the internationally acclaimed bassist, cellist and composer Lars Danielsson and two jazz greats from the north: Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and British guitarist John Parricelli. The music captures the unique atmosphere of the castle and reflects the tranquillity, beauty and intimacy of the recordings. This album brings to life the original vision behind the collaboration between ACT and Château Palmer: to capture the magic that happens when extraordinary artists come together in an extraordinary place.
Le Calme au Château... There is no better way to put it... Recorded not in a studio, but in the wood-paneled salon of a historic Bordeaux wine estate, the second collaboration between ACT and Château Palmer brings together bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson with his longtime companion and guitarist John Parricelli and Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola. Château Palmer, an oasis of peace and concentration, was not only the ideal location for the recording, but is perhaps also the perfect metaphor for the music of three masters of European jazz who combine tradition with the joy of experimentation. After "DUO" by Michael Wollny and Joachim Kühn, this second installment of the partnership between ACT and Château Palmer was an ideal opportunity for Lars Danielsson to try out a new, exclusive line-up. The choice of guitarist John Parricelli was an easy one: both have known each other for a long time through Danielsson's "Liberetto" band. The Brit is an extremely sensitive accompanist, someone who knows Danielsson's way of writing and playing inside out and has a keen sense for playing exactly the right notes at the right time. Lars Danielsson was immediately enthusiastic about the idea of completing the trio with Verneri Pohjola - the Finnish trumpeter's velvety tone fitted perfectly into his concept for the recordings.
In many respects, the album is characterized by the principle of "beauty through simplicity". Lars Danielsson recalls: "Shortly before we met on Château Palmer, I had a big concert in Luxembourg that took up all my attention. It was only afterwards that I put this series of melodies down on paper. I know myself, I'm at my best when I'm in a hurry." But it wasn't just the rush that led to the compositions on "Trio" having a compact character. "I felt very drawn to a song format in general for this project. I needed a voice for these songs - and Verneri Pohjola's trumpet seemed perfect for that. We didn't want everyone to have a solo on every track, we wanted to focus on the essence of the melody. This helped us to create a natural flow, a shared momentum. We firmly believe that beauty can come from simplicity."
The recordings took place between the end of May and the beginning of June. While the grapes were ripening outside and the winery's craftsmen were busy at work, the trio's music was also taking shape in the Château Palmer salon. The three musicians and producer Andreas Brandis were gathered in one room, without the usual isolation of a studio, without sheet music, screens and - for the band leader and bassist - even without headphones. Through this closeness, the recording audibly captures the joy of a collective sound in which each piece can unfold naturally. Lars Danielsson says: "Just as you don't have to drink the whole bottle to enjoy a wine, I don't believe that you always have to play all the notes for music to unfold and develop. The compositions on the album have their own natural dynamics. And I didn't feel the need to give Verneri and John any instructions. I wanted everyone to feel free within the suggested framework."
The carefully crafted songs not only represent the spirit of the collaboration, but also pay homage to their French hosts. There is "Étude bleue", based on a "blue-colored" guitar ostinato. The almost abstract "L'Époque" refers to Debussy's Syrinx for solo flute. The poetic "Peu d'amour" is by Verneri Pohjola and "Lacour" by John Parricelli, which is inspired by the music of Olivier Messiaen. There are also three cover versions, including a fascinating version of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo", which underlines the spirit of the jazz tradition that runs through the entire album.
The result is a feast for the senses, similar to a wine tasting at Château Palmer. You can almost smell the wood of the double bass, touch the valves of the trumpet, feel the early summer sun shining through the windows and taste the wine that was an inseparable part of the recording and the meals shared during their time together in Bordeaux. "TRIO" allows us to share in this very special feeling of closeness and tranquillity and creates a magical place that you will want to return to again and again.
