Editors's info:
Manfred Schoof has always been able to do whatever he felt like doing. With every step he took, he solidified his reputation as a world-renowned all-around great. Free jazz and big band swing, modern jazz and classical avant-garde, fusion and even television jobs have spelled out the musical ABC of a musician who knows no fear of contact. This quality-conscious openness had already announced itself in those years when Schoof was a student at the Cologne Musikhochschule. While he was being taught harmony by the contemporary composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Schoof was arranging for Kurt Edelhagen and the WDR Big Band - and playing with Alexander von Schlippenbach. Even in the 1960s, when the German jazz avant-garde was experimenting with free jazz in all its shades, his artistic impetus did not disappear in the fog of the currently fashionable zeitgeist. Rather, even in the confusion of everything-is-possible and everything-is-permitted, he sought recognizable contours in his improvisations
Alexander von Schlippenbach forms one of the fixed points in Schoof's musical career; his ,,Globe Unity Orchestra", founded in 1966, and his trio with Evan Parker and Paul Lovens, which has existed since 1970, are among the longest-lived lmprovisator collectives from the up-and-coming music of those years. Schlippenbach is, in fact, one of the few who profess an unwavering commitment to free jazz and have always remained skeptical of such vague terms as "free improvised music. Schlippenbach is a jazz musician, speaks jazz with a, worked his way through bebop phrases in the fifties in venues that bore such beautiful names as ,,Tarantel", ,,Boheme", ,,Tabu", until four in the morning with musicians of the Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra, recorded the first free-tonal pieces with Gunter Hampel, founded Germany's most important quintet formation with Manfred Schoof and still leads the ,,Globe Unity Orchestra" - he has nothing more to prove
The duo shows itself to be a stylistically opposing pair that does not communicate with each other via harmonies, but provokes each other and prods again and again with quotations, alienations, integrated motifs and revealed emotional thrusts. A summit meeting!

Stereo, September 2011
"In mostly original numbers, Monk aficionado Schlippenbach chisels unwieldy chords beneath Schoof's warm, coherent melodic arcs. Free playing comes here in a chastened and confident attitude"
