DICTE TAKES FATE INTO OWN HANDS ON AUDACIOUS ALBUM
Despite much of the material on Dicte's ninth solo album being written after her mother's passing, a spirited, optimistic, and audacious songwriter meets us with open arms on LET’S ESCAPE.
The ten new songs on Dicte's new album LET’S ESCAPE are a testament to a singer-songwriter arriving at an age where she dares to say - and sing - things without compromise.
As the music dances elegantly between pensive gems and powerful incendiary bursts, the 57-yearold songstress explores themes covering everything from the beginning to end to the end of life - most importantly, what happens in between, which we should all make the most of, while we can:
“My mother died a year and a half ago after a complicated process. The love between us was sometimes complicated, but the experience has made me reflect that love can come in many forms,” Dicte says.
“I've realized that many people have someone in their lives that they feel they should love unconditionally, but that those feelings can seem very lonely. Art. And music can open the door to conversations that can otherwise feel shameful or forbidden,” she says about the experiences the songs have already helped put into perspective.
Not Barbie and Ken
At the same time, the album also contains encouraging songs about taking chances in life, such as buying a Mobile Home and leaping headfirst into the unknown with your loved one. “We may not be Barbie and Ken, but it's still you and me till the end,” she sings on the title track.
“My new album is about learning to soar and live strong - creating a life where you take destiny into your own hands. A life where you don't submit to other people’s notions of love and happiness.”
Songs like the unbridled Shoot A Hole and the album’s beautiful closer Starchild, in particular, are calls to live life to the fullest, take chances, and stick it to the man.
“The ordinary is rarely what shakes things up in the world. The chances you take - allow you to evolve and succeed. We tend to preach the safe and sensible, but we should also have faith in ourselves and each other instead of being controlled by fear.”
And it's okay to float a little, she encourages: “The common denominator on LET’S ESCAPE is learning to float. Instead of weighing my kids down with worries, I want to show them that it’s possible to soar in the face of sometimes challenging relationships. Steffen Brandt said it best: ‘Kiss that damn life,’" she concludes.
In the Spirit of the 70s
Together with producer Kasper Rasmussen and an ace team including guest musicians Mika Vandborg, Mads Reinhold, Kasper Tranberg, and Mads Hyhne, Dicte has created an album that draws on the influence of musical luminaries she grew up with in the 1970s.
Dicte describes LET’S ESCAPE as standing on the shoulders of classics like Bowie's SCARY MONSTERS, Stevie Wonder's HOTTER THAN JULY, and Blondie's PARALLEL LINES.
