Editor's Info:
Alison Balsom has waited until now to record a work which, as she says, evokes “a true melancholy that only a certain style of trumpet-playing can achieve.” It is Aaron Copland's Quiet City, first performed in 1941 in its version for trumpet, cor anglais and strings. Copland saw it as both nostalgic and expressive of “a society profoundly aware of its own insecurity”.
Around Quiet City, she has built an album that explores the convergence of classical music and jazz in 20th century America. It includes a new arrangement of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and music by Leonard Bernstein, Charles Ives, Kurt Weill (who emigrated to America in the 1930s) and – maybe surprisingly – the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. The link here is legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis: Alison Balsom plays an arrangement of the famous slow movement of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez that was made for Davis by another great jazzman, pianist Gil Evans.
“This album has been an utter joy to make,” says Alison Balsom. “I loved every minute of the sessions with the brilliant Britten Sinfonia, conductor Scott Stroman, oboist and cor anglais player Nicholas Daniel and my great friend and collaborator, pianist Tom Poster … I’m so proud of this project and can’t wait to share it.”
BBC Music Magazine * * * *
Revisiting the improvisatory practice of jazz icons with highly idiosyncratic techniques can fall flat, but Balsom and the Britten Sinfonia make it work. They are entirely idiomatic and wonderfully engaging, both here [the Rodrigo/Evans] and in their other sketches of America.
Gramophone Magazine
To say that Balsom is in touch with the soul of her instrument would be to downplay her artistry...there are technical things she does here so effortlessly that we her listeners can just relax into the phrasemaking as if it’s something she’s made up on the spot.
The Guardian
As an entity it creates a varied album in every kind of mood. It will delight anyone, not only the trumpet expert, who admires Balsom’s eclecticism and musical brilliance...Balsom’s virtuosity is spellbinding throughout.
