When composer Sergey Akhunov came across Henri Matisse's groundbreaking 1947 collection of silhouettes entitled "Jazz," he was struck by its almost surreal character. The idea was born to compose music of his own entitled "Jazz." The project took shape when violinist Julia Igonina and pianist Maxim Emelyanychev commissioned him to compose a work for them. The 15 miniatures have titles taken from Matisse's book. They are coupled with two French masterpieces of the forties by Messiaen and Poulenc (whose favorite painter was Matisse).
