Editor's Info:
After five triumphs at the Paris Opera, Chevalier Gluck, reformer of French opera and protege of Marie-Antoinette, created his last work in 1779: Echo et Narcisse, based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. Adopting the style of a pastoral, it was spurned by the public at its premiere, but is a tribute to the splendour of the French tradition. With the support of the Fondation Etrillard, Herve Niquet has resurrected Gluck's last opus, in which the fates of the nymph Echo, who repeats the last word she hears ad infinitum, and the proud Narcissus, condemned to love only his own reflection, intertwine: two perfectly Baroque myths!
Le Concert Spirituel – whose name is taken from France's first private concert society, founded in the eighteenth century – is today one of the best French ensembles on both the national and international stages. Responsible for multiple ambitious, original projects since its foundation in 1987 by Hervé Niquet, Le Concert Spirituel specialises in performing French religious music, but has also established a solid reputation in rediscovering an unjustly forgotten lyrical heritage (Andromaque by Grétry, Callirhoé by Destouches, Proserpine by Lully, Sémélé by Marais, Le Carnaval de Venise as well as Lully's 1770 version of Persée).
Among the highlights of the Concert Spirituel's 23/24 season are the opening of the Opéra Comique season by the Concert Spirituel Choir under the direction of Hervé Niquet with La Fille de Mme Angotby Lecocq, the 3rd opus of the tetralogy of lyrical tragedies with Iphigénie en Tauride by Campra and Desmarets at the TCE and the revival of Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse de Boismortier at the Opéra royal de Versailles in its stage version.
There are also major concert dates with the Coronation Anthems continuing their French tour, notably at the Opéra National Capitole Toulouse, Fauré's Requiem, which will be published on CD in the spring of 2024 and performed at Bozar Brussels, and Handel's Fireworks at the Sézanne Festival.
Recordings this season include Handel's oratorio Israel in Egypt and Campra and Desmarets' opera Iphigénie en Tauride for Alpha Classics.
