Już sam program płyty ułożony z kompozycji własnych Galliano (5), trzy Astora Piazzolli i po jednym Erika Satie, Paula Misrakiego i Serge Gainsbourg pokazuje wielonurtowość jego muzyki.
Poza liderem grającym na akordeonie usłyszymy gitarzystę i wiolonczelistę Sébastiena Giniaux i kontrabasistę Diego Imberta. Mam przekonanie, że w takim kameralnym składzie oryginalność formuły Galliano ujawnia swoje najbardziej sugestywne oblicze.

Na przestrzeni lat Galliano współpracował z wieloma wybitnymi artystami, jak Juliette Gréco, Charles Aznavour, Chet Baker, Charlie Haden, Wynton Marsalis, Paolo Fresu, Gary Burton, Toots Thielemans, Enrico Rava, Jan Garbarek, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling czy Herbie Hancock. Przełomowym momentem w jego karierze były koncerty z Astorem Piazzollą. To właśnie genialny Argentyńczyk nauczył Galliano innego traktowania rytmu, harmonii oraz melodii. Muzyka Piazzolli, owo melodyjne, folkowo-jazzowe "nuevo tango" stało się dla Galliano ważną inspiracją. Jego "tango mussette" zaczęło łączyć jazzową improwizację Jarretta, Parkera i Coltrane'a z impresjami Ravela i Debussy'ego.

Płytę otwiera kompozycja Piazzolli "Vuelvo al Sur", po którym następuje "New York Tango" autorstwa lidera. Są to dwa filary artystycznego języka francuskiego akordeonisty - jego fani wiedzą z wywiadów, że wśród inspiracji wymienia po pierwsze dorobek Piazzolli, po drugie amerykański jazz. Piazzolla powraca ponownie w trzecim utworze na płycie "Chiquilin de Bachin", po którym następuje wspaniała "Gnossienne nr 3" Erika Satie. Dalej własny standard "Milonga del Angel" i przebój Paula Misrakiego z filmu z 1955 roku "Chiens perdus sans collier". Dalej trzy własne kompozycje Galliano "Il Piccolo Circo", "Waltz For Nicky" i "Tango Pour Claude". Ponownie akordeonista sięga do tradycji francuskiej piosenki, bowiem ostatni utwór to dedykacja dla Claude'a Nougaro - francuskiego kompozytora i piosenkarza. Płytę kończą "Milonga Del Angel" Astora Piazzolla i wzruszające wykonanie "La Javanaise" Serge'a Gainsbourga, w którym Galliano oddaje pałeczkę publiczności.

Pomimo swoistej "mozaikowości" koncepcji Galliano, niepowtarzalne detale decydujące o wyrazie całości, są na tyle wymowne, że nie sposób pomylić Galliano z kimkolwiek innym. Wrażenie jednolitości narracji jest dojmujące, francuski akordeonista zostawia jednak sporo miejsca dla uruchomienia wyobraźni słuchacza, stąd zapewne taki aplauz publiczności zgromadzonej w sali koncertowej w niewielkim szwajcarskim mieście - Cully!

W serii Swiss Radio Days Jazz prezentowane są koncertowe nagrania dokonane podczas występów światowych gwiazd w Szwajcarii. Wydawanie serii rozpoczęło się w roku 1995. Najnowsze wydawnictwo dokumentujące koncert tria Richarda Galliano jest 47 woluminem zbioru. To dość nietypowy tytuł, ze względu na czas powstania nagrań. Dokumentuje bowiem koncert tria Richarda Galliano z bieżącego roku. Artysta wystąpił na festiwalu w Cully na początku kwietnia. Wcześniejsze wydawnictwa Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series skupiały się na archiwaliach sprzed kilkunastu czy wręcz kilkudziesięciu lat.
Festiwal w Cully to specjalne miejsce dla Galliano. Koncertował tu kilka razy, zarówno z własnymi zespołami, jak i w duetach z Michelem Portalem czy też Eddym Louissem. W roku 2022 muzyk zagrał w Szwajcarii z towarzyszeniem kontrabasisty Diego Imberta oraz wiolonczelisty i gitarzysty Sébastiena Giniaux. Nazwa, jaką przyjęło trio – New York Tango Trio – odnosi się do dawnej kompozycji lidera oraz pierwszych nowojorskich nagrań z udziałem Ala Fostera, George’a Mraza i Biréliego Lagrène’a.
Prawie godzinne nagranie zawiera jedenaście utworów. Prawie połowa z nich to kompozycje Galliano (wśród nich dwa wielkie hity: Tango pour Claude i Waltz for Nicky). Trzy to dzieła Astora Piazzolli – na czele z Milonga del Angel. Całość uzupełnia muzyka Erika Satie (Gnossienne No.3), Paula Misrakiego (piosenka "Chiens perdus sans collier" z roku 1955, znana z filmu pod tym samym tytułem z udziałem Jeana Gabina i Anne Doat) oraz Serge’a Gainsbourga (La Javanaise kończąca wieczór w prawdziwie magiczny sposób: kapitalnym duetem Galliano ze… śpiewającą publicznością).
Odbywający się w niewielkim Cully jazzowy festiwal cieszy się dużą popularnością tak wśród publiczności, jak i wykonawców. Jedni i drudzy chętnie przyjeżdżają do miejsca słynącego z wyjątkowej atmosfery. Najnowsza płyta Richarda Galliano potwierdza, że dzieją się tam rzeczy naprawdę nadzwyczajne.

There is no gainsaying the status of Galliano as the premier accordionist of his generation. That is, in jazz terms, for he has amassed a formidable discography in collaboration with substantial jazz figures, of both US and European origin. This is not that kind of occasion. Appearing here at the 39th Cully Jazz Festival – it's in Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva, should you wish to know – before a rapt and hugely enthusiastic audience, Galliano offers a virtuosic programme of his own pieces, plus those of his late hero Astor Piazzolla and others by composers as varied as Eric Satie and Serge Gainsbourg.
He says the concert is a reminder of his trip to New York when he recorded with Al Foster and company.
Galliano's command of his instrument's capacity for emotional portrayal, danceable rhythm and distinctive dynamic variation is undoubted and clear throughout this beautifully recorded recital (part of the Swiss Radio Days series). If there is what we might recognise as jazz improvisation, it is masked within his commitment to the New Tango concept as well as to Jazz Musette. Each is apparent here, and given the latter's emphasis, it's no surprise that Giniaux's occasional guitar solos are Django-esque. There is no swing here, rather music of compelling beauty, a piece like Piazzola's ‘Chiquelin De Bachin’ enhanced by Imbert's superb arco bass, Giniaux's cello and their sweeping, combined ‘orchestral’ backdrop. There is variety here, and consummate mastery, too, wrapped in an elegant fusion of tango, classical, and musette, And some jazz? Yes, for the already convinced and those seeking insight into Galliano's unique musical sensibility.

Jazz accordionists in the past (Mat Matthews, Leon Sash, Art Van Damme, etc) tended to take a peripheral role, but Richard Galliano is justifiably prominent, mainly because he has taken the instrument successfully into areas of improvisation by incorporating elements of jazz. For inspiration, he has followed the eminent Argentine Astor Piazzolla, some of whose compositions are used in this live set from the Cully Jazz Festival.
This trio setting is the perfect blend of his instrument, with its range of sound, with that of the highly rhythmic guitar and cello of Sebastien Giniaux and the deeply pulsating heartbeat of Diego Imbert’s bass. The musicians interact well, responsive to one another according to the mood and feeling of each piece, Galliano himself directing proceedings and jumping up a gear when necessary.

Richard Galliano started studying piano and accordion at the age of 4 with his father Lucien Galliano, accordionist and teacher.
Particularly gifted and invested, he quickly entered the Nice Conservatory, directed at that time by organist Pierre Cochereau, and followed courses in harmony, counterpoint and trombone. He won first prize in 1969 with trombone.
He arrived in Paris in 1975 and met Claude Nougaro, becoming his friend, his accordionist and conductor until 1983.
The author and composer had found each other. They got along beautifully. From this close collaboration many songs that are part of the heritage of French music, such as Allée des brouillards, Des voiliers,Vie Violence were born.
The second decisive meeting took place in 1980, with the Argentinean composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla.
Astor strongly encouraged Richard to create the French “New Musette”, as he himself had previously invented the Argentinean “New Tango”.
