Editor's Info:
With You In Mind: The Songs Of Allen Toussaint, a new release from Galactic-drummer Stanton Moore with David Torkanowsky (keyboards) and James Singleton (bass) features an all-star cast: Cyril Neville, Jolynda Kiki Chapman, Nicholas Payton, Donald Harrison, Trombone Shorty, Maceo Parker, and Wendell Pierce. The musicians on With You in Mind: The Songs of Allen Toussaint are present-generation masters of the unique musical style of the world-historic city of New Orleans. These singers and players felt the mission of the album, and delivered inspired, focused performances. Producers Torkanowsky and Moore sculpted it all into a great album that grows with every subsequent listen.

DownBeat * * * *:
Galactic drummer Stanton Moore formed his own trio (with Astral Project pianist David Torkanowsky and bassist James Singleton) a few years back to explore music beyond the confines of that New Orleans jam band’s funky base. Their 2014 outing, Conversations, featured Moore on straightahead swingers inspired by New Orleans hard-bop drummer James Black along with a couple of second-line groovers that showcased his street-beat chops. On this follow-up album, a tribute to the late Crescent City icon Allen Toussaint, the interactive trio is joined by a host of special guests who put a personal spin on tunes by the prolific New Orleans songwriter.

Trombone Shorty, the hottest commodity out of New Orleans these days, contributes some earthy tailgate lines on “Here Come The Girls,” a 1970 hit for Ernie K-Doe. Moore and his crew put a 7/8 spin on Toussaint’s “Life,” and they deliver a slamming 5/4 version of the 1969 Lee Dorsey tune “Everything I Do Gone Be Funky,” which features guest Maceo Parker on vocals and alto saxophone.

The biggest surprise here is “The Beat,” based on a Toussaint poem from a little-known book of poetry he wrote back in the day. Recited by Cyril Neville, this rare spoken-word number, underscored by Moore’s entrancing Afro-Caribbean rhythms, is another ingenious way that the drummer was able to put his own stamp on the legend’s music.

The Wall Street Journal:
… Throughout, Mr. Moore’s trio plays with appropriate effervescence or restraint. The group emboldens Mr. Toussaint’s grooves less through force than with finely wrought details. As did Mr. Toussaint, it uses subtle cues to bring out the best in others. A stately swing enables singer Jolynda Kiki Chapman’s tender and direct delivery on “All These Things,” a ballad first sung by another Neville brother, Art, in 1962, when Mr. Toussaint was just beginning an early hot streak. On “Night People,” Mr. Torkanowky’s greasy Wurlitzer electric piano figures urge on both Cyril Neville’s vocal and alto saxophonist Maceo Parker’s pithy solo. On the ballad “With You in Mind,” the trio shines on its own: Mr. Torkanowsky’s gentle touch and sense of proportion lend shape; Mr. Singleton solos with a full and soulful tone; and Mr. Moore strokes his snare with brushes as if stoking a slow-burning fire.
The final track opens with actor Wendell Pierce reciting the lyrics of “Southern Nights” to Mr. Moore’s drumbeats. This might have seemed mere affectation, were it not for the loveliness of Mr. Toussaint’s words (“free as a breeze, not to mention the trees”). Near the end of his career, on his 2013 solo “Songbook” album, Mr. Toussaint reclaimed this song from the bombast of Glen Campbell’s version, which topped 1977’s pop chart. Once Mr. Pierce is done, Mr. Payton plays it as a gospel-tinged blues on Hammond B3 organ and trumpet. Wordlessly, Mr. Payton captures the boyhood wonder while gazing up at a Louisiana night sky that first inspired Mr. Toussaint…
