180-gramowa audiofilska reedycja albumu "Bouncin' With Dex" saksofonisty Dextera Gordona dla SteepleChase. Płyta nagrana została w 1976 roku w doskonałym składzie. Gordonowi towarzyszy pianista Tete Montoliu, kontrabasista Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen i perkusista Billy Higgins. Z tym ostatnim Gordon gra niemalże od początku swojej kariery, co najmniej od płyty "Go" (Blue Note, 1962). Higgins był wtedy już po nagraniu absolutnie kultowych jazzowych płyt Ornette'a Colemana - "The Shape of Jazz to Come" i "Free Jazz". Z Tete Montoliu i Nielsem-Henningiem Orstedem Pedersenem grał niemalże od początku, od kiedy zamieszkał w Kopenhadze, gdzie spędził znaczną część swojego życia.
Pięć utworów, z których najkrótszy ma ponad pięć, a najdłuższy prawie 10 minut to soczysty hard bop. Trzy standardy i dwie własne kompozycje układają się w zwartą narracyjnie opowieść. Gordon pomimo tego, że przez całe życie był mainstreamowym muzykiem, bez ciągot do awangardy wypracował idiomatyczny, rozpoznawalny styl gry na saksofonie tenorowym. Tak jest i tym razem, niezwykle starannie skonstruowane, ale z dużą dawką luzu trafiają na wspaniały grunt, a drumming Higginsa jest tutaj nieoceniony, stawia mocny rytmiczny stempel tam, gdzie napięcie spada. Tete Montoliu terminował wtedy u samego Anthony'ego Braxtona, u Dexa jednak prezentuje nader delikatną pianistykę, bez zbędnego akcentowania uderzeniami w klawisze zachowuje swingujący i delikatny klimat całości. Nie dziwi więc fakt, że "Bouncin' with Dex" otrzymało tyle dobrych recenzji.

It is safe to say that the latter half of Dexter Gordon’s European years (1961-1976) found him most inspired and productive. This album recorded in a Copenhagen studio in September of 1975 precedes to Gordon’s most publicised homecoming to the States. With his favourite rhythm section of Montoliu, NHØP and Billy Higgins Dexter is in his pinnacle. It is also noteworthy to know that this is the only studio recording Dexter Gordon and the formidable Catalonian pianist made together.

Dexter Gordon thrived on the attention of European jazz fans while living there during the 1960s and early '70s, while he also had a wealth of opportunities to record for labels on the continent. This 1975 session for Steeplechase, one of a dozen he made as a leader for the label in the mid-'70s, finds him in top form, accompanied by pianist Tete Montoliu, along with frequent collaborators Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass and drummer Billy Higgins. Gordon's big tone carries the brisk treatment of Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce," though he inserts a few humorous quotes into his solo as well. Two versions of the standard "Easy Living" are played at a loping tempo in a heartfelt manner, though the master is a tad better in its execution. The familiar bop vehicle "Four" (usually credited to Miles Davis, though this CD acknowledges Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson as its more likely composer) explodes in a furious performance. Gordon wrote the Latin-flavored "Catalonian Nights" especially for Montoliu, while the tenorist's "Benji's Bounce" is a lively, thinly disguised reworking of Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning" (which is itself based on the changes to "I Got Rhythm").
