Editor's info:
Two Centuries is the collabrative album between venerated jazz legends Wadada Leo Smith and Andrew Cyrille, with Pakistani-American electronic experimentalist, composer and drummer, Qasim Naqvi. It will be out on October 7th via Red Hook Records.
Red Hook Records is a new label launched in 2020 by former ECM producer Sun Chung. It aims to dissolve musical boundaries through the interweaving of musical genres and the exploration of intercultural collaborations. Among the label’s new upcoming releases are projects with Kit Downes, Jason Moran, BlankFor.ms, Bill Frisell, and Wadada Leo Smith.

The Wire

"…a significant avant highlight in 2022 landing post abstract expressionist in a serene oasis of sound"

The premiere from drummer and synthesist Qasim Naqvi. We first met Qasim Naqvi as the drummer in the trio Dawn Of Midi, a group that played propulsive, groove-based “electronic” music on acoustic piano, bass, and drums. Lately, he’s been composing choral works, chamber music, and working with a modular analog synthesizer that he has patched together (literally, that’s how you attach the modules to each other to make the instrument work). In October, Naqvi will release Two Centuries, a collaborative LP with two of his teachers, composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and drummer Andrew Cyrille. Qasim plays his modular synth. Fans of the jazz avant-garde will know both Smith and Cyrille as veterans capable of impressive bursts of sound, and there are moments of free jazz wailing on this album, but for the most part, the two of them are offering some of their most restrained and distilled musical expressions here. Today we premiere the album’s leadoff track, “For D.F.,” dedicated to Darnella Frazier, the young woman who recorded the video of George Floyd’s murder. With Naqvi’s drifting electronics, Smith’s haunted trumpet, and Cyrille’s brooding percussion, the work has a nocturnal, even spiritual cast.
