Alessandro Scarlatti's oratorio Il Martirio di Santa Teodosia is an exciting drama of life, love and death, set in the fourth-century Roman Empire. St. Theodosia of Tyre died at the age of eighteen, in the year 308. Preferring to devote her life to God, Teodosia rejects the love of Arsenio, the son of the Roman governor, and welcomes death. The dramatic strength and vocal beauty of this work flourishes in the hands Emmanuelle de Negri, Emiliano Gonzalez Toro, Anthea Pichanick, Renato Dolcini and the orchestra Les Accents led by Thibault Noally.

Emmanuelle de Negri sounds distinctly older than Teodosia’s tender teenage years; but, given Scarlatti’s athletic vocal demands that’s no bad thing. It’s quite a sing and she takes on the feisty coloratura with gusto…Throughout, Noally coaxes shapely, expressive playing that occasionally indulges in a little over-plush upholstery to intensify the pathos; but, plugging an inexplicable gap in the catalogue, the warmly recorded result is persuasive.

Renato Doncini’s Urbano is filled with fire and emotional sparks, and Emmanuelle de Negri’s Teodosia contains the vocal defiance that enhances her role, while Pichanick’s Decio is suitably changeable in terms of singing style as befits her role. Emilano Toro’s Arsenio is spot on in terms of diction and phrasing.

[Negri] brings both grace and passion to a role that ranges from contemplative ecstasy…Bass lines sometimes seem over-weighted, especially in slower numbers. This proviso apart, Thibault Noally directs with dramatic flair and secures crisp, thoroughly idiomatic playing from his expert period ensemble. No one with a taste for Baroque oratorio need hold back.

The work contains some lovely proto-Handelian things, and Emmanuelle de Negri sings the dominant name part beautifully, while under Thibault Noally the playing is both crisp and winningly expressive.
