Kwartet OGJB czyli jeden z najciekawszych zespołów typu all stars nowojorskiej sceny zapowiada swoją najnowszą płytę. Nazwa bandu to akronim stworzony od imion jego członków. Oliver Lake na saksofonach, Graham Haynes na trąbce, Joe Fonda na kontrabasie i legendarny perkusista Barry Altschull dziś proponują album poświęcony wielkiemu Ornettowi Colemanowi.

Ode To O to ich druga płyta w dyskografii, po ogromnie wysoko cenionym Bamako wydanym w maju 2019 roku albumie Bamako. Jego tytuł pochodzi od tytułu kompozycji Barry'ego Altchulla, którą napisał w 2015 roku tuż po śmierci Ornette'a Colemana. Historia tego kwartetu, który na nasze szczęście nie rozwiązał się chwilę po powstaniu datuje się na 2016 rok. Wówczas ci czterej dżentelmeni wystąpili na nowojorskim festiwalu WInter Jazz Festival. Na swoją pierwszą rejestrację płytową kazali czekać trzy lata, ale to nie powinno nikogo zbytnio dziwić, każdy z nich, bowiem to nie tylko mistrz w swojej klasie instrumentalnej, ale także bardzo aktywny artysta i lider wielu innych przedsięwzięć artystycznych. Ustalenie wspólnego terminu na nagraniową sesję mogło zająć trochę czasu.

Ode to O od swojej poprzedniczki także dzieli trzyletni okres. W styczniu 2022 roku płyta ukaże się na rynku i zawierać będzie kompozycje każdego z członków kwartetu. O ile jednak Bamako była albumem w pełni akustycznym tutaj w panoramie brzmieniowej pojawi się elektronika, którą zaprzągł w proces twórczy Graham Haynes. Tak skomentował ten fakt Joe Fonda: "elektronika przekierowała nas w kompletnie nowa strefę doświadczeń i otworzyła muzykę zupełnie nowe możliwości".

Ode To O is the second release by the OGJB Quartet that features four leaders in their own right, saxophonist Oliver Lake, cornetist Graham Haynes, bassist Joe Fonda and drummer Barry Altschul. As with their first release, Bamako, each member has contributed compositions to the new recording which also features two collective improvisations.
The album features compositions by each member of the ensemble, as well as two collective improvisations. Says Fonda, “This second recording by the OGJB Quartet draws from a wide range of musical influences that exist inside the quartet. On this recording, we pulled out all the stops.”
"Ode to O" is Altschul’s composition dedicated to the late Ornette Coleman. According to Altschul, the melody came to him in a dream after hearing of the passing of Ornette Coleman in 2015.

This second recording by the OGJB Quartet draws from a wide range of musical influences that exist inside the quartet. On this recording, we pulled out all the stops. Just like our first time around, each member contributed a number of compositions for this date.
Listen to Barry Altschul´s "Ode to O" (for Ornette Coleman) and "Da Bang" (for Billy Bang). You can hear and feel the deep connection to our tradition, to the feel and groove we call Swing. While you´re listening, check out the wonderful dialogue between the bass player and the drummer.
On one of the two compositions Graham Haynes brought in for this date, the piece entitled "The Other Side," Graham incorporates the use of his electronics, which took the quartet into a totally new zone. His electronics opened up the music to new and fresh possibilities. Graham also uses his electronics on "OGJB #4."
Oliver Lake, a master composer and instrumentalist, also contributed two pieces for the recording session. Each of them is unique and quite different from the other. Whenever anyone gets the opportunity to play Oliver´s music, they are transported into the Lake universe of sound. That is where the OGJB Quartet again went when we recorded his two pieces. Check out the groove on Oliver´s composition "Bass Bottom" - mysterious, unique, dancing, floating on air.
The composition I brought to the date, entitled "Me without Bela," takes you on a journey. You have to sit back and relax because it is a long ride from where we start to where we end up. Listen to the cosmic sounds of Barry´s percussion in the opening section and again in the final section.
We also have two collective improvisations on this recording, "OGJB #3" and "OGJB #4," that continue the tradition established with "OGJB #1" and "OGJB #2" on our first recording, Bamako. This quartet consists of master improvisers of the highest order and these two pieces are living documentation of that reality.
I have so much respect and admiration for the musicians, the producer and the recording engineer who together made this recording possible. We were a Sextet during this session!
