Jego kunszt producencki przeplata się z umiejętnością prezentowania emocji w wysublimowany sposób, gdzie proste teksty są zarazem pełne niedopowiedzeń i uczuciowych zawirowań. Charakterystyczne syntezatory i znane już rozwiązania rytmiczne zaskakująco dobrze łączą się z elementami afroamerykańskiego folkloru, a całość uzupełniają nawiązania do klasycznych hip hopowych beatów. Jednak najważniejszym elementem wyróżniającym album i świadczącym o jego wartości jest niezwykła wrażliwość Deva Hynesa. Na Cupid Deluxe połączył on swoją fascynację stylistyką lat osiemdziesiątych, zainteresowanie klimatem nowojorskich ulic i nocnych podróży, podczas których tracimy poczucie miejsca i nie wiemy, gdzie jesteśmy i w którą stronę podążamy. Cupid Deluxe to także odwołanie do gejowskiej kultury, transseksualności, zacierania granic między tożsamością płciową. To nie tylko odniesienie do środowiska, w jakim Dev dorastał. To także sposób na ukazanie uniwersalnych prawd zawartych w jego utworach — nie da się uniknąć, jak sam Blood Orange to określił, przechodzenia od sytuacji pewnych do niepewnych, od stabilności do niestabilności. Kupidyn może swoją strzałą dosięgnąć każdego. Każdy, bez względu na to, gdzie i kim jest, może mieć złamane serce. Są to sprawy oczywiste, a jednak podane w tak wyjątkowy sposób stawiają Deva w szeregu najlepszych producentów i artystów współczesnego R&B (. . .)

(. . .) Cupid Deluxe has two rap songs, and both push the guest rappers into places where I’ve never heard them. “Clipped On” has Despot, of Queens, a veteran of the Def Jux skronk-rap underground. But here, he’s rapping plain, conversational relationship jealousy-based real-talk over tumbling breakbeats and sunny, airy electric-piano chords. Skepta, meanwhile, comes from London’s noisy, fervid grime world, but on “High Street,” he raps calmly and contemplatively about trying to find ways to escape childhood poverty, about hearing his voice on the radio for the first time. Both get to, more or less, take the lead on their respective songs, finding a place for their voices within Hyne’s chiffon-smooth aesthetic. And both sound amazing, like they’ve finally arrived home. Urbani, too, sounds better than ever, her sassily smoky alto hovering just above Hynes’s marimba-dings and bass-pops. Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek makes a gorgeous echo on “Chamakay,” answering Hynes’s fragile, tentative tenor like a sympathetic ghost. Dave Longstreth, on “No Right Thing,” gets to turn the theoretical R&B impulses of his Dirty Projectors records into something tangible and real, putting on an absolute white-soul clinic. And even if you can’t always pick out Kindness or Clams Casino, it helps, somehow, to know that they’re there, that they’re contributing to this community of artists, that they’re part of the support network (. . .)

(. . .) Cupid Deluxe largely (and winningly) follows the formula set forth by those modest hits, while bringing them forth on a full-length scale. Across the album, Hynes sings, writes, produces, and plays guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, synths. But this is hardly a solo act. In fact, one of the record's greatest strengths lies in its pitch-perfect deployment of guests. Not only does each member of the Cupid Deluxe team seem to fully understand the overarching wistfulness of the whole, but many of them show off heretofore unheard facets of their talent. While Hynes' girlfriend and Friends frontwoman Samantha Urbani and Kindness leader Adam Bainbridge exhibited tentative skills with their respective groups' debut albums last year, they make the most of their spotlights here, Urbani often sounds like she's mimicking the sultry chirpiness of an absent Solange, but her clear chemistry with Hynes makes the substitution more than adequate (. . .)
