(. . .) Flaming Lips zamieniają materiał Beatlesów w noise’ową pulpę. Koncepcja ćpuńskiej, wariackiej reinterpretacji "Sgt. Pepper’s Lovely Hearts Club Band" w pierwszej chwili wydaje się pociągająca, ale ostentacyjne "psucie" oryginalnych kompozycji gitarowymi i komputerowymi hałasami, szybko staje się nudne, męczące i przewidywalne. Destrukcja jest przeprowadzana z pełną premedytacją. Wystarczy posłuchać tych fałszów, recytacji i mruczeń Coyne'a, częstokroć zastępujących śpiew, ogarnąć poziom głośności chaotycznej solówki w utworze tytułowym i wszystkie dźwięki, które pojawiają się na dalszych planach utworów. Przypomina to bardziej rejestrację tripu po kwasie niż regularny album muzyczny. Dlatego właśnie ten materiał brzmi najlepiej w momentach "konserwatywnych", pozwalających na wyeksponowanie walorów kompozycji – "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" zaśpiewane uroczo zmęczonym głosem przez Miley Cyrus, "Getting Better" z absolutnie urzekającymi chórkami, "She's Leaving Home" – ulotny, synthpopowy szlagier z Julianną Barwick na wokalu, wreszcie – "Lovely Rita" z udziałem Tegan & Sara (. . .)

(. . .) One of the great breakthroughs of Sgt. Pepper was how it used the recording studio to create a vivid, three-dimensional sense of space and place, bringing the lyrics to life in audio-storybook form. (Think of the live-concert ambience of the opening title-track “With a Little Help From My Friends” suite, or the carnival-esque clamor of “Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”; even the clarinet refrain of “When I’m Sixty Four” gives off the musty scent of a grandparent’s house.) But the Lips and Fwends go to town on these songs with little regard for thematic resonance or big-picture atmosphere. In the spirit of the aforementioned 80s-era indie cover-song desecrations, these aren’t so much revisions as disembowelments that replace the guts of the originals with a tangle of short-circuiting exposed wires. And given that the Lips weren’t even around to supervise all of their guest contributions (Coyne and co. actually only appear on a handful of tracks), things undoubtedly get messy quick, if not downright hazardous. With its scatterbrained, kinder-pop take on the title track (which climaxes with an arrhythmic, atonal guitar solo from J. Mascis), and a strangulated call-and-response between Wilco offshoot the Autumn Defense and Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale (aka Black Pus) on “With a Little Help From My Friends”, the project effectively gives Sgt. Pepper the shreds treatment (. . .)

(. . .) The first truly breathtaking moment comes three tracks in, when a gorgeous, woozy voice starts intoning 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds'. It sends you scrabbling for the contributors' list: whose voice is that? It's Miley Cyrus - 2014's favourite enfant terrible steals the show both here and on closer 'A Day In The Life'. The 21-year-old is one of a revolving cast of guest appearances; over the course of the album's 13 tracks, Wayne Coyne takes a back seat to the likes of Tool Maynard's James Keenan, Tegan & Sara and MGMT. The record is unified by the sheer joy that runs through it - no mean feat when it features so many different voices. The result is a delightful tribute to The Beatles and a record that has made so many turn on, tune in and drop out (. . .)
