Pięć lat po ukazaniu się albumu "Waiting For The Moon", ale też po dwóch intrygujących solowych albumach wokalisty Stuarta Staplesa, zespół Tindersticks powraca z płytą "The Hungry Saw", która pod każdym względem jest nowym otwarciem w jego karierze.

Tak długą przerwę w działalności Tindersticks Staples tłumaczy tym, że w pewnym momencie kariery jego zespół stał się zbyt wielką bestią, by móc ją wykarmić do syta i w pełni nad nią panować. W latach 90., na przestrzeni zaledwie trzech albumów - "Tindersticks", "Tindersticks" (2) i "Curtains" - on, ze swoim głębokim, podszytym bluesową melancholią barytonem, przywodzącym na myśl Scotta Walkera, Nicka Cave'a i Leonarda Cohena, oraz jego zespół, wsparty sekcjami smyczków i blachy, nadali całkiem nowe znaczenie pojęciu kameralistyka rockowa. Na przekór ówczesnym rockowym modom, ta muzyka, smutna, refleksyjna i klaustrofobiczna - bez wątpienia adresowana do dorosłej, dojrzałej emocjonalnie publiczności - okazała się triumfem, którego rozmiar mocno zaskoczył załogę z Nottingham i wywołał w niej pewiem dyskomfort. Niemniej trzeba było żyć i pracować dalej. Jednak trzy znakomite albumy ("Simple Pleasures", "Can Our Love…" i "Waiting For The Moon") później, dla Staplesa i Tindersticks, który był już sekstetem, nadszedł moment, kiedy potrzeba jakiejś gruntownej zmiany osiągnęła punkt krytyczny.

To dobrze, że zespół nie uległ presji rynku i nie podjął żadnych nie do końca przemyślanych decyzji, dotyczących jego przyszłości. Czas okazał się najlepszym doradcą i oto wokalista, po cennych doświadczeniach w studiu jako solista i po przeprowadzce z rodziną z Londynu do Francji, zaprosił do swojego nowego, przydomowego studia Le Chien Chanceux dwóch najstarszych członków Tindersticks, gitarzystę Neila Frasera i klawiszowca Davida Boultera, oraz parę nowych muzyków: perkusistę Thomasa Belhoma i basistę Dana McKinna'ę. Ta piątka w ciągu zaledwie ośmiu dni nagrała cały nowy album (smyczki, zaaranżowane przez Lucy Wilkins i blachę, nadzorowaną przez Terry'ego Edwardsa dołożono później), w którym odbija się zarówno tak pożądany przez Staplesa powrót do prostoty i bezpośredniości emocjonalnej Tindersticks z pierwszych płyt, jak i uderzające natychmiast większe zniunansowanie muzyki pod względem nastroju. Jeśli niegdyś, jak ujął to jeden z recenzentów, muzyka Tindersticks była "pajęczyną oczekiwań i urazów, cudowną galerią szeptów", albo refleksem "deszczu padającego na bruk i zapachu francuskich papierosów", tak teraz jest podobnie, o czym dziś natychmiast przypomina instrumentalne "Intro", łączące celnie "The Hungry Saw" z przeszłością. Tyle, że tu poprzez chmury czasem przeziera promień zachodzącego słońca.

Oczywiście, ten powrót do źródeł trzeba traktować raczej umownie, bo odzyskana przez zreformowanych Tindersticks dawna prostota jest przefiltrowana gruntownie przez wszystkie muzyczne doświadczenia zespołu, lekko zabarwiona klimatami kojarzącymi się z dziełami impresjonistów i ogromnie wyrafinowana. Aby się o tym przekonać, dość posłuchać choćby utworu "The Flicker Of A Little Girl", lekko nawiązującego do poetyki najlepszych ballad Burta Bacharacha, "Boobar Come Back To Me", gdzie wychwycić można echa piosenek spod znaku wytwórni Tamla Motown z początku lat 60., czy wreszcie majestatycznego "The Turns We Took", który efektownie, jakby autobiograficzną nutą zamyka album. "The Hungry Saw" to dzieło mistrzów, będących w szczytowym momencie swych twórczych sił. Warto było czekać pięć lat.

The Hungry Saw is the seventh studio album by British alternative band Tindersticks, released on 28 April 2008 by Beggars Banquet Records. Following the release of the band's sixth album, Waiting for the Moon in 2003, Tindersticks had entered an extended hiatus before reconvening to perform at the Don't Look Back event in September 2006. This concert marked the final performance of the original line-up of the band, and three members left the group shortly afterwards. The remaining members of Tindersticks felt reinvigorated by the performance, and relocated to France to begin working on new material in the summer of 2007, recording and producing the album at their own Le Chien Chanceaux studio in Limousin. The Hungry Saw was the first new Tindersticks material in five years.

Two songs from the album, "The Hungry Saw" and "Boobar Come Back to Me", were released as singles. Critics noted that the album stayed close to the soul-influenced sound that Tindersticks had been exploring since their 1999 album Simple Pleasure, and praised the band for their consistency. The Hungry Saw was met with generally positive reviews.

Musical differences had come to a head during the recording of Tindersticks' previous album Waiting for the Moon in 2003, and the band entered an extended hiatus. Island Records issued remastered and expanded versions of the band's first four studio albums and the Nénette et Boni soundtrack, along with a compilation album that documented Tindersticks' time with Island entitled Working for the Man, in 2004. Singer Stuart Staples started the Lucky Dog record label and released his debut solo album, Lucky Dog Recordings 03–04, in 2005 and the Leaving Songs album in 2006, while violinist Dickon Hinchcliffe recorded the score to the 2005 Ira Sachs film Forty Shades of Blue. The original six members of Tindersticks reconvened for one final time in September 2006 to play their second album Tindersticks in its entirety for the Don't Look Back series of concerts, after which three band members left the group.

The remaining three members, Staples, guitarist Neil Fraser, and multi-instrumentalist David Boulter, felt reinvigorated by the concert and were keen to continue as Tindersticks. In 2006 Staples and his family had relocated to Limousin in France, and during the first half of 2007 the band built their own studio, Le Chien Chanceaux, in a barn in his garden. Most of the recording for The Hungry Saw, the first new Tindersticks material in five years, took place over an eight-day period in June 2007 in the new studio. Dan McKinna and Thomas Belhom, who later became full-time members of the group, were recruited to play bass and drums respectively, and long-time collaborators Ian Caple, Terry Edwards, Lucy Wilkins and Calina de la Mare helped with the recording and the arrangements. Following further recording sessions at Eastcote Studios and Olympic Studios in London, the album was produced and mixed at Le Chien Chanceaux by Stuart Staples.
