The activist Arnljot Eggen (b. 1923) has been a poet for over 50 years during which he has produced works of many genres - a.o. 11 collections of poems, prose and poem books for children, and plays. He has rendered a number of Polish and Russian post war lyric into Norwegian and translated almost 40 plays. His book of ballads, entitled "Baksideviser" (drawback ballads), from 1970 has changed ballad-Norway forever. In a moment, the romantic and gentle atmosphere disappeared. The texts were full of cutting, satiric edge and irony about the contemporary Norwegian society.
