putting holes into october skies

The face hidden behind the vagueness of Phon°noir [read: phono noir] belongs to 23-year old
berlin-based musician Matthias Grübel, for whom phon°noir is still a rather young project...
it all started off one february evening in 2004.
"I had problems demoing a few songs i had just written. At some point i started loading arbitrarily recorded noise bits and sampled sounds of my daily life into a drum computer. it started off
as a sort of funny experiment and as an escape from boredom, but from that very moment
it caught me on an emotional level. There was no structure to it and the rhythmics were heavily
broken. But it felt like coming home just by coincidence after a long time abroad. Everything
i wanted to say suddenly seemed so easy to express." says Matthias. So instead of putting
the new material to one side and focussing his attention elsewhere, Matthias kept on working
in an almost delirious state. By the time evening had become night, Matthias had the rough
outline of what should later become two songs that now finally found their way onto this album: the great big hole in the sky and warm from the inside...
