Editor's info:
“Background Music” was released in March of 1981, YMO’s fourth album wasn’t exactly BGM. YMO continues where they left of the Multiplies, venturing further into the synthesizers, drum computers and experimenting with rhythm, sequences and speeds. This album is more focused on atmosphere and mood settings, some even say this album is a turning point for YMO and international pop music scene. They successfully merged lyrics, soundbites and their signature electric programmed music with BGM. “1000 knives” (new recordings) and “CUE” are most famous, “The Hand Clap” on “1000 knives” is probably one of the most used samples in the 80’s early 90’s. Peter Barakan, a british Japanologist/broad-caster, was asked to co-write a few tracks which give tracks like “Cue” more meaning and even more depth. BGM is YMO, and then some!

BGM is the fourth album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, released on March 21, 1981. The title stands for "Background music". This album was produced by Haruomi Hosono. YMO was the first band to utilize the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, one of the first programmable drum machines, as early as 1980. In early 1981, they released BGM, as their first studio album recorded with the Roland MC-4 Microcomposer and TR-808.
