Editor's Info:
The third release from Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques in their cycle of operas by Antonio Salieri features the composer's Tarare, originally premiered in 1787. The opera's libretto was penned by Beaumarchais, who Salieri met in Paris in 1784 when the two artists were enjoying a triumph - one with Le Nozze di Figaro, the other with Les Danaïdes. Beaumarchais saw Salieri as Gluck's successor, and entrusted him with this libretto adapted from a Persian tale. Set in in a barbaric Asia, Tarare tells the story of Sadak and Kalasrade, who were subject to the whims of a corrupt and perverted Sultan and a manipulating pontiff. Alone against everyone, Tarare, man-at-arms, is the hero of the moralistic fable. The work has it all - politics, love, intrigue - and scenes of great spectacle. However, it is the spirit of the Enlightenment that fuels the action, presenting a cutting satire on despotism.
