Of his 170 mélodies, Charles Gounod is best known his art songs based on French poems. However, having spent four years in London, songs set to English texts make up a third of his total output. As a chapel master, Gounod was particularly sensitive to the strength of words, his music serving to amplify the texts while respecting the articulation and the natural inflection of the verses. Baritone Tassis Christoyannis and pianist Jeff Cohen are masters of this repertoire. Their previous recordings have become benchmarks in the discography of the French song.
