It would have been easy for Héloise Gaillard, flautist and oboist, Violaine Cochard, harpsichordist, Ophélie Gaillard, cellist and Maryseult Wieczorek, soprano, to draw on their reserves to shine, each on her own, in the timelight. Formerly critics always spoke of 'multi-facted talent'. Flattering sound control, skilful editing, a few twirls and twiddles and there you are!
Of course in this day and age it would be eminently possible, but that would be not to take account of taste for understanding of musical texts of the past and for their comparison, two things that for me form the profound originality of the Amarillis Ensemble and which give rise consequently to the unity and coherence of the programme of this CD. An understanding of the texts and their comparison are two complementary procedures that seemingly miraculously manage to bring out the creative spontaneity of the compositions, some of which date back some four centuries, astonishing the listener as though he had never heard them before and was discovering something entirely new.
