This program is destined for recording and concerts but not for scene. It was thus important to conceive a layout that allows the music to generate dramatic tension. Zoroastre and Zaïs, written around the same time (created in 1749 and 1748), have been treated like two poles : on the one hand, Zoroastre is the darkest tragedy Rameau ever wrote music for; and on the other hand Zaïs is the most graceful and human entertainment of Rameau, the one that is the less subject to the dramas caused by time - but also his less known work nowadays, despite all the wonders it contains.
