Tym albumem zespół Les Arts Florissants inauguruje serię trzech płyt poświęconym Madrygałom Claudio Monteverdiego, ale ukazujących te zbiory kompozycji w nieco odmienny sposób. Każdy tom boweiem poświęcony będzie jednemu miastu które odcisnęo swe piętno na życiu i twórczości kompozytora. Ten pierwszy tom poświęcony jest Matui (składają się na niego wyjatki z IV, V i VI księgi), a kolejne prezentować będą Cremone (księgi I, II i III), oraz Wenecję (księgi VII i VIII).

Całość ściśle ma byc powiązana z pracami naukowymi (historycznymi i muzykologicznymi) jakie Paul Angew prowadził i prowadzi na temat tego cyklu kompozycji Monetverdiego i ukazywać je w nowym, pełniejszym jeszcze świetle, jak najbardziej (na ile to możliwe) ) zbliżone do wizji kompozytora.

With this album Les Arts Florissants inaugurate a three-volume series devoted to the finest pages of Monteverdi’s madrigals. Each volume will be linked to one of the cities that marked the composer’s life: the present opus dedicated to Mantova (extracts from Books IV, V and VI) will be followed by two others devoted to Cremona (April 2015 - Books I, II and III) and Venice (February 2016 - Books VII and VIII).

These publications all draw on the indepth work carried out by Paul Agnew at the head of an ensemble that has already shone in this repertoire on numerous European stages.
