Editor's info:
Gioachino Rossini's international career began in 1822 with the triumphant success of his operas in Vienna. For the 1823 Carnival season, he signed a contract with the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, guaranteeing his wife the role of Prima Donna and himself the musical direction of the new opera. All rights remained with the theater at a high price. With his librettist Gaetano Rossi, he adapted a tragedy by Voltaire which, with its monumentality and perfection, bears the signature of the genius at his creative peak. Semiramide is the quintessence of a career spanning just ten years, in which Rossini radically renewed the Italian melodrama and now once again created a work with a classical structure in which the musical numbers clearly stand out from the recitatives.
"It is always remarkable what a high level of level of musicianship here in Bad Wildbad this concert version really leaves nothing to be desired really leaves nothing to be desired." (Online Music Magazine)
