To już druga płyta w repertuarze Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreena, duńskiego kompozytora, który zmarł 27 czerwca 2016, na której spotykamy Kronos Quartet i Paula Hilliera, założyciela The Hilliard Ensemble, który tutaj prowadzi Theatre of Voices. Pierwsza została wydana w 2008 przez duńską wytwórnię Dacapo Records

Po stosunkowo krótkich doświadczeniach z muzyką serialną, Gudmundsen-Holmgreen wraz z Ib Norholm’em zapoczątkowali ruch określany jako Ny Enkelhed (New Simplicity). Zwrot ku prostocie był niejako reakcją na panujący w muzyce europejskiej serializm, czy jego skrajną formę New Complexity. W rezultacie muzyka Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’a sprowadzała się do adaptacji banalnych odgłosów codzienności, repetycji. Jako przykład można wskazać np. Plateaux pour deux (1970) na wiolonczelę i klakson samochodowy, czy Symphony-Antiphony na orkiestrę (1977), która jest właściwie w całości oparta na repetycjach materiału. Bardziej obrazowym przykładem są słowa Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’a na temat własnej twórczości: ”prostota materiału, [muzyka] nie-dramatyczna, bez patosu, bez dążenia czy kulminacji… nudna dla słuchacza … [i] ogromnie nudna do wykonywania”.

"Green Ground" zawiera napisane z myślą o Kronos Quartet i Theatre of Voices dwie kompozycje z 2011 roku: No Ground (String Quartet No. 11) i No Ground Green - for 4 voices and string quartet.

This album presents the world premiere recording of a unique new set of pieces by Danish composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, written and dedicated to his GRAMMY®-winning playmates in the Kronos Quartet and Theatre of Voices with conductor Paul Hillier. Using a text from Henry VIII’s Songbook and taking musical inspiration from the old ‘ground’ technique and from a certain famous Baroque canon, Green Ground offers a kaleidoscopic trip through the enchanting world of PGH, offering independent layers of playful sounds for strings and voices and then merging them together to the accompaniment of wooden percussion instruments.
