'After two recordings devoted to the music of Bach in his 'choreographic' manner (the English and French Suites), I wanted to turn my attention to another form: the toccata. Here, far removed from the two-part structure with repeats and its intimate relationship with the gestures of dance, the expressive content follows a freer path: Bach, like his predecessors, explores with 'fantasy' and majesty the different shapes that the pleasure of touching the keyboard may assume - virtuosity freed from a precise tactus, strict polyphony, brilliant fugues, ornate adagios, recitatives follow on from one another in differentiated sections yet within an overall architecture that is clear and magisterial in its design.
