Wiele jest fascynujących instrumentów, które frapują nie tylko barwą brzmienia, ale samą konstrukcją. Jednak żadna muzyczna maszyna nie pobije w tej konkurencji organów. Biograf Jana Sebastiana Bacha – nota bene wielkiego organisty i wybitnego znawcy konstrukcji organów – profesor Christoph Wolff uważa, że do chwili wynalezienia komputerów, to właśnie organy były najbardziej skomplikowanym urządzeniem, które stworzył człowiek. Ci, którzy na przykład w XVIII wieku fascynowali się technologią, z podziwem przypatrywali się temu muzycznemu instrumentowi. Na przestrzeni wieków organy zmieniały się i rosły, ich konstrukcja stawała się coraz bardziej skomplikowana i wyrafinowana. Najstarsze z łatwością mieściły się na kolanach (średniowieczne organetto), z czasem urosły tak, że zaczęły wypełniać całe ściany świątyń i sal koncertowych. Bogactwo ich brzmienia do dziś budzi respekt.

I właśnie koncerty na ten instrument - organy są podstawą tego nagarnia. W sumie Holger Gehring wybrał tu cztery z nich - po dwa z opusu 4 i 7. Handel pisząc swoje partytury nie zapisywał szczegółowo ich partii - szczątkowo tworzył partie orkiestrowe, a często przy partiach organowych zapisywał tylko "organy według uznania". Sam wykonując swoje koncerty organowe całe te partie improwizował. Współcześni mu opisując te koncerty świadczą, iż w tej sztuce nie miał sobie równych, często traktując swój instrument nie jako potężny aparat wykonawczy, ale przydając mu lekkości i zwiewności przynależnej częściej partiom fletów i niż organów.

I właśnie do takiej tradycji odwołuje się to nagranie Holgera Gehringa i Barockorchester Der Kreuzkirche Dresden - stara się ukazać lekkość, piękno i finezję muzyki Georga Friedricha Handla.

This recording is predominantly shaped by four organ concertos from Handel’s London years and is complemented by an overture from an oratorio which relates directly to the development of the organ concertos. The overture appears in the original orchestral scoring. A movement of another oratorio’s overture is included in one of the organ concertos in the demonstrably extraordinarily popular, contemporary arrangement for a keyboard instrument.

Conducted by Dresden’s Kreuzorganist (Organist at the Church of the Holy Cross) Holger Gehring, experienced musicians have united for playing these works in a way similar to the original. This recording is based on extensive investigation which reconstructs both the original ornamentation used and choice of tempo and the original mood.

It is demonstrably not enough to just play the notated sheet music, rather it needs embellishment with abundant ornamentations. For some works or individual movements, there are contemporary ornamentations, others have been similarly supplemented. Other sources such as the contemporary piano scores by William Babell likewise substantiate this practice. Timing instructions, authentic tempo measurements from dance movements from the 18th century and much more forms the basis for the choice of tempo.

The so-called “Liegende Orgel” [horizontal organ] at the Dresden Kreuzkirche is used in this recording. This also matches the historical performance situation, in which the composer himself likewise conducted the orchestra as the soloist from an organ with horizontal pipes. All that allows us to get a very interesting insight in Handel’s London work.
