Editor's info:
Franz Tunder (1614/15-1667) is today first of all known as the percusor of Dietrich Buxtehude as the organist of St. Mary in Lübeck. His biography and the works passed down offer the image of a multifaceted musician and composer. His compositions are obviously influenced by the northern German tradition.

This is also reflected by the selection of compositions presented on this CD. The rare compositions passed down show Tunder as a completely modern musician in therms of his time. In total, there esist 17 vocal works, among them seven based an Latin texts. The bequeathed organ compositions consists of four preludes (a fifth exists in fragments), eight choral based pieces (a ninth is fragmented) and a canzona. Whilst the preludes and choral compositions reproduced established models, the independent cnazona results from the composer's interest in the contemporary keyboard style. These musical principles being partially opposed are intensely sounded by this profound interpretations. The recordings took place in St. James in Lübeck, a church with preserved historical cubing and interesting organs. This room left us feel the atmosphere of St. Mary in Tunder's time.
