Legrenzi's career was indeed eventful; before becoming maestro di cappella of St. Mark's in Venice, he had been approached for a position at the court of Louis XIV and had also hoped for a function at the Imperial court in Vienna. This recording echoes these events with a monumental Dies Irae and motets that were found in the library of Sébastien de Brossard, as well as the Sonate a quatro for viols that originate in a collection dedicated to the Emperor. The compositions recorded here show us a musician whose lyricism is very much operatic in style, but who nevertheless displays a complete knowledge.of polyphony.
