Obok Jordiego Savalla Paolo Pandolfo to najbardziej poszukujący muzyk grający na violi da gamba. Włoski wirtuoz tworzy nie tylko ma wskroś oryginalne interpretacje muzyki Marina Marais, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe'a czy J.S. Bacha, lecz także improwizuje w idiomie renesansowym i tworzy własne kompozycje na ten przeżywający renesans instrument.
Na płycie "The Excellency of Hand - English Viola da Gamba Duos" z angielskim instrumentalistą Robertem Smithem, członkiem Fantasticus (uczniem Paolo Pandolfo) w fascynujący sposób przybliżają świat muzyki dawnej i barokowej. Usłyszmy tu kompozycje Christophera Simpsona, Johna Jenkinsa i Simona Ivesa, uzupełnione o jedną autorstwa Roberta Smitha.
W tym repertuarze, obaj instrumentaliści odnajdują się perfekcyjnie, czasami bardzo wirtuozowsko, innym razem z dużą powściągliwością.
Pandolfo od wielu już lat podkreśla znaczenie improwizacji, jako narzędzia pozwalającego wniknąć w strukturę dzieła – ukierunkowanego na pracę twórczą, a nie odtwórczą. Bycie świadomym artystą, który samodzielnie określa swoją postawę estetyczną, wymaga nieustannego poszukiwania i pełnego zaangażowania popartego ciężką pracą. Nigdy jednak doskonalenie techniki nie powinno być celem samym w sobie, aby nie zagłuszyło naturalnego entuzjazmu wypływającego z tworzenia sztuki. Czerpanie przyjemności z tego co się robi, to wartość nadrzędna – gwarantuje szybkie postępy i doskonałe efekty.

Following on from his critically acclaimed recording of solo English viola da gamba works (Tickle the Minikin), founder member of Fantasticus, Robert Smith, is joined by the prolific and celebrated viola da gambist, Paolo Pandolfo, for this album of English duos for the instrument.
Featuring a selection of seventeenth-century repertoire from Christopher Simpson, John Jenkins and Simon Ives, this album is packed with divisions for duo, which are often intensely virtuosic. Also featured are a selection of preludes from Christopher Simpson’s The Division Viol and an additional prelude by Smith himself.
