An auspicious meeting with the early music pioneer Maria Leonhardt convinced the then recent (2005) Moscow Conservatory graduate and virtuoso violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky to change course and concentrate on historical performance practices. In 2007, Mr. Sinkovsky decided to seriously pursue his talent as a countertenor as well. His unusual, remarkable array of talents are all featured on this new Naive release of Vivaldi instrumental and vocal works, including 'The Four Seasons', on which he performs with La Voce Strumentale, the ensemble which, incidentally, he founded in 2011.

Sinkovsky sprinkles Vivaldi's seasonal varieties with a vocal concerto and an opera aria from Farnace: pretty vehicles for a chameleon-like voice well worth the listener's ear. Yet the biggest quirks are in the Seasons themselves, despatched with curiosities of tempo, tone colours and improvised flourishes that may make your jaw drop.
