In his preface to the CD booklet, Heinz Holliger speaks of 'the 'miracle' of Elliott Carter's late works', and this is hardly hyperbole. As he approaches his 95th birthday in 2003, 'America's great musical poet' (to quote Andrew Porter in the Musical Times) is in the midst of the most productive period of his career. British magazine The Economist recently noted that 'through the decades, Mr Carter has created a musical language that uniquely fuses American iconoclasm and European historicism. Today, he is writing music of dazzling brilliance and subtlety, music that speaks with a playful, and even youthful, directness. His productivity has increased as he has struck out into new fields and forms, pouring forth a stream of pieces. Over the past two decades, Mr Carter has refined his language. Many of the same concerns are there: an emphasis on tempo as well as harmony as structural force, a laser-like ear for instrumental colour and above all the creation of a vivid depth of experience for performers and listeners. But there is an even wider expressive range in the recent works, which encompasses lightness and humour as well as power and seriousness.' As Holliger says, Carter is 'the only contemporary composer capable of achieving such a natural balance between horizontal and vertical, who, with ever more wondrous serenity and freedom is creating works whose complexity attains an almost Mozartian oneness with the work and reveals itself quite simply and naturally to the responsive ear of the listener.'
