Jeden z najwybitniejszych interpretatorów muzyki dawnej i barokowej Philippe Herreweghe, wraz z prowadzonym od lat Collegium Vocale w Gandawie, niezmiennie raczy melomanów wspaniałymi odczytaniami klasycznych dzieł.
Herreweghe to jeden z kilku największych autorytetów, jeśli chodzi o dziedzictwo Jana Sebastiana Bacha. Blisko pięć dekad temu założył w belgijskiej Gandawie zespół Collegium Vocale, który niestrudzenie dąży do jak najbardziej zgodnego z estetyką epoki wykonawstwa muzyki Jana Sebastiana Bacha. Nie dziwi więc fakt, że każda kolejna pozycja z bachowskiej spuścizny spotyka się z dużym zainteresowaniem.
Od lat realizuje autorską zasadę, wedle której trzeba znaleźć równowagę między dokonaniami wielkich mistrzów barokowego wykonawstwa w osobach Gustava Leonhardta czy Nicolausa Harnnoncourta, na polu stylistyki, ornamentyki, rytmiki a prawdziwą istotą dzieł Jana Sebastiana Bacha, czyli tekstem. Jak często powtarza "Bach to słowo z muzyką, a nie muzyka z tekstem".
W 1993 roku na łamach „Ruchu Muzycznego” Izabela Skowrońska pisała: „Herreweghe stara się pojąć intencje kompozytora, zrozumieć zawartość dzieła, jego wyraz i znaczenie, jak najdokładniej poznać tło historyczno-kulturowe. Analizuje tekst, formę, strukturę muzyczną; bierze pod uwagę rolę społeczną, ewentualnie funkcję liturgiczną utworu. (...) ustosunkowuje się do wszystkich znanych interpretacji”.
Tak tez jest i tym razem. Na wydanej właśnie przez oficynę wydawniczą Phi płycie usłyszymy trzy kantaty lipskiego kantora - Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 4, Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79, i Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80.

For the fourth time on the Phi label, Philippe Herreweghe presents three cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach – Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 4, Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79, and Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80. Written at different moments in the composer’s life and based to a large extent on the works of Martin Luther, these cantatas reflect a marked taste for dramaturgy, vivid word painting and an invariably astonishing use of instruments and voices. Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent give us an accomplished version of these masterpieces, confirming, if further proof were needed, their stature as ardent champions of Bach.
