"Occasionally a player comes along who turns all the preconceived ideas about their instrument on their head, and reinvents the repertoire. ... Alison Balsom is a virtuoso player and a natural, gifted communicator, but what really comes across is her sheer exuberance and joy in making music." Classic FM Magazine

Following the popular and critical international success of her Haydn and Hummel concertos recording ("Poetic renditions ... performed with a clear, soaring tone, virtuosic technique and elegant phrasing." -The New York Times), Alison Balsom has recorded a programme of Italian Baroque concertos.

Already released in Germany in January, the album has quickly garnered critics' praise: "The fast movements are played with sparkling ease and technical brilliance. The slow movement [Balsom] forms delicately, tenderly, yet without denying she's playing a brass instrument." - MDR Figaro

After the release of Caprice in 2006, Gramophone wrote, "It's not often that a young musician appears on the scene abundantly blessed with everything both an A&R and marketing person could dream of, but the young British trumpeter Alison Balsom fulfils just such a dream. She's a musician of prodigious talent with an inquisitive, fresh approach to music-making. She is connected to her public, and rewards their attention with playing of a winning ease and fluency. She has an engaging personality ... and the intelligence to take her burgeoning career well in her stride." In this new recording, Balsom, the 2009 Classical BRIT Artist of the Year, plays popular concertos originally composed for the violin or oboe by Vivaldi, Tartini, B. Marcello, Albinoni and Cimarosa, accompanied by the Scottish Ensemble.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was a violinist and teacher in addition to composing. The publication of his Opus 3 concertos in Amsterdam established his reputation as a composer outside his native Italy. Bach transcribed several of Vivaldi's concertos, which led to his music becoming well known in Germany. Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was the younger, and more prolific, of the two Marcello brothers, both Venetians of noble birth. He composed around 700 works, most of them vocal. His concerto in D minor, published in Amsterdam in 1717, was later embroidered by Bach who transcribed it for solo harpsichord. Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1750), who turned to composition in his mid-20s, wrote at least 80 operas, few of which survive. With the exception of his Adagio, the concerto Opus 7 No. 3 is probably his best-known work. Albinoni's music, like that of Vivaldi, was not widely known until after his death. Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801) is best known for his opera Il matrimonio segreto. The Concerto in C minor performed here derives from an oboe concerto by Arthur Benjamin based on themes of Cimarosa. Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) is best known today for his extraordinary virtuosity as a performer and for his "Devil's Trill" sonata. He also composed around 135 violin concertos. His Concerto for Violin in E Major is also known as a concerto for trumpet in D Major.
The version performed by Alison Balsom on this recording is that edited and arranged by John Wallace and Simon Wright.

An unusual career goal for a young girl it may be, yet Alison Balsom aspired to be a trumpet soloist from the age of ten, when her parents took her to a Barbican Centre performance by the great Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger. She went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music, at the Paris Conservatoire and with Håkan Hardenberger himself. Through BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme from 2004 to 2006, she appeared at the Wigmore Hall and with all the BBC Orchestras.

Many honours followed: Best Young British Performer (2006 Classical BRITs); Classic FM Listener's Award (2006); Rising Artist of the Year (2007 Echo Klassik Awards); first British Female Artist of the Year (2009 Classical BRITs). Balsom had the distinction of performing at the 2009 Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

She has appeared throughout Europe, the United States and Asia with leading orchestras, as a recitalist on both Baroque and modern trumpets and in chamber music with the Balsom Ensemble. She was recently appointed Visiting Professor of Trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music. In the coming months, she performs in the UK, Austria, France, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil and the United States.

Alison Balsom records exclusively for EMI Classics. Her internationally celebrated Bach Trumpet and Organ disc of 2005 was followed by the Caprice album which won her further critical acclaim. Her most recent recording of two gems of the trumpet repertoire, the Haydn and Hummel's Trumpet Concertos, was named among the 24 best classical CDs of 2008 by The New York Times.

Versatile and enterprising, the Scottish Ensemble is a tightly-knit band of outstanding musicians from Scotland and Europe who perform together under Artistic Director Jonathan Morton. The group has a reputation for innovative commissioning and programming, performing unusual pieces alongside better known music. Based in Glasgow, the Scottish Ensemble tours throughout Scotland and appears regularly at London's Wigmore Hall, the BBC Proms, and the Edinburgh International, City of London, Aldeburgh and St Magnus Festivals. Internationally, the Scottish Ensemble has toured China, Germany and France.
